I agree. I think it was a foolish miscalculation on the S. Korean gov'ts part. Why come out and apologize on behalf of this kid who had long since disassociated himself from CIVILIZATION? It's a weird claim to association. It's like saying 'oh, he's one of us, but we don't want Americans to think poorly of us, let us be contrite and apologize.' This sort of apology serves to further polarize the issue as a racial one imho. If there is a racial issue here though, I do wonder if this will force more Asian parents to reassess their priorities about their kids regarding things like school, academic achievement and 'notions of success' or esteem. The priorities for a lot of Asian families in the States are really messed up imo. In mentoring younger Asian Americans, I see it all the time. Take this VTech trajedy. The media wants to paint this kid's family as poor, yet this dude's sister went to Princeton for crying out loud. Even if it's wholly on student loans, what kind of family prioritize their resources on sending a kid to the best school over the mental health of another??? Messed up sh*t. theSAGE
hindsight is 20/20. There are dozens oof guys like this on every campus in the US. How do you tell when someone goes from being socially inept to psycho. And I cant believe the media is bringing the guy's race into this. Have to stop watching cable news for another month or so...hopefully the media will have found something else to milk by then
I'm sorry, but most of these "warning signs" the cable news channels are harping all over weren't warning signs at all. They keep mentioning how he "stalked" 2 girls in 2005. Apparently, all he did was call them and text them. The 2 girls didn't think it was serious enough to even file charges. They've been quoted as saying he was "annoying." Are we supposed to assume that every guy that "annoys" a girl will go on a deadly rampage killing? The clowns on Fox News were saying that he had a tattoo and that was "another warning sign that was ignored". Huh? A tattoo is a warning sign that someone will go on a deadly rampage killing?? Yes, he had mentioned that he was suicidal. Not the first college kid to do that. I really do wish the cable news channels would just go away.
Same here. They just love to milk a tragedy for all it's worth. Back in college I met a couple of people who wouldn't of surprised me if they were serial killers. As for stalking women.... well, who hasn't at one time or another.
this whole "multimedia manifesto" thing really should never have been released. all it does is feed the ideas of the other killers out there... makes this VT killer look like some sort of cult figure now... these news organizations have a responsibility to not air that kind of stuff, why honor the wishes of this a**hole? just for ratings.. of course... its a shame...
Who is examining them? Us? What good does that do? It's just like looking at an accident from your car window on the highway.. does no good.. The authorities are examining them.. that's good enough for me. Keep him out of the spotlight.. every nut job in america now knows they can be nationally famous and now a freakin' historical figure so to speak if they kill a bunch of people... positive reinforcement anyone?
Agreed, but that's not why CNN and Fox News are playing it (over and over and over and over and over again). It's all about ratings and nothing more.
Well, I said this in the D&D, but I have a Korean co-worker and he was saying he wished it were another nationality that did this crime...His reasoning was that some portion of Americans would associate all Koreans like him...We all know that isn't true, but its the un-educated/ignorant people that do exist that give credence to his wish, hence why I think the Korean govt. did this... That being said, after seeing his manefesto, that guy was one f'd up dude...May he burn in hell...
People already know they can be famous. It is nothing new. This goes beyond crime and car accidents. It is about the human condition. What really drove him to do this? I think it is important for everyone to understand and not just brush it off as a wacko. We have to listen.
Yes, but how famous? You're seriously telling me that having someone's disjointed writings and videos/picture sets that reek of inferiority complex plastered all over tv and the internet doesn't encourage other people with this sort of problem to lash out in order to gain some fleeting moment of fame? A face and a name on tv is one thing... this is another.. Besides, he sent it to NBC.. he WANTED it to be shown to everybody in the nation. Why HONOR that? WHY. What good does it do society to see this crap?
We have to see and listen, not for the character for he wants to portray but for what he really was. I want to know. The more insight the better.
It should eventually be released, of course. Just a little patience and time is appropriate here I think.
I'm ok with people looking at these things as long as they're crime fighting professionals who know how to analyze these things and can use it to prep them for future such tragedies. It's not really something that I think needed to have been publicly released. I don't see the benefit of it.
So when will the first funeral be held? I'm asking because after seeing/hearing interviews with family members of the deceased victims that is something they are ready to move on to next, to see their loved ones and say their final goodbyes. One parent said that they haven't been able to even look and identify the bodies yet and that troubles him.
If it was up to me I wouldn't release the guy's name to the media, let alone play those videos on the news. I wouldn't do it out of respect to the victims and to not encourage anyone of trying to go out in some kind of misconcieved glory.
