and that is your reason for not shutting down the school? because it is a HUGE 2,600 acres? it is NOT impossible to get the word out to 2,600 acres
Man, on CNN they were just talking about emergency personnel removing victims from Norris Hall and those personnel officers heard the victims cell phones ringing and could only think that it was friends and family trying to check on these people.
right, the parents cannot follow their kids everyday and tell them what to do and how to do it and when to do it. people have their own free will to choose what they want to choose. environment is not the only thing that influences a person
The University of Texas at Austin Tower will be darkened this evening (April 17) and will remain dark through Thursday night (April 19) in remembrance of the victims of the shooting incident yesterday at Virginia Tech University. In addition, flags will be lowered to half-staff through Sunday as the University symbolizes its compassion and concern for the members of the Virginia Tech community. Student Government is planning a vigil on Monday (April 23) to express support for the people of Virginia Tech. The starting time is yet to be determined. The Tower will again be darkened on Monday evening in connection with the event.
And the student population is over 26,000 people--that doesn't count faculty and staff. Only about 10% of the cities in Virginia are that big. For all intents and purposes, a campus of this size IS a small city in itself. But all of that is irrelevant. Up until this incident, I've never heard of a domestic dispute that ended in death turn into a mass murder a few hours later. I doubt the authorities there did either. I would have thought more about putting my manpower into trying to ID the perp to put out an APB expecting him to run out of town. I'm sure they thought the same thing. And what is the connection between the alleged girlfriend and the classrooms where the mass killing occurred? What if the guy hated people who eat beef? He could have just as easily walked into a Mc Donald's off campus that probably existed closer to the dorm than some classroom completely on the opposite end of campus. Where do you draw the line? Do you shut down the whole city? The whole state? The nation? Earth? I think you're being awfully reactionary, and I don't think you've thought this through with any common sense...........you're running purely on emotion. Granted, that isn't uncommon in such a horrible tragedy, but two hours later, that guy could have been 100 miles away---either running for his life or shooting up another school in another state. To expect a college town--no, to expect any town to have the resources available to expect the completely unexpected is just asinine.
Man, I simply answered another guy's question about that campus. I've already given other reasons for not shutting down the school. If you want to be unreasonable and stupid, go ahead ... but that does not convince anybody.
lol, you are being way out of line. noone is asking the whole city to shut down, let alone, state, nation , earth, universe. domestic dispute? it was a bit more than that. shooting two people and killing one should be grounds for high alert. NOONE knows what will happen, BUT, when someone is KILLED, which it seems to me that you and others are downplaying that it happens quite OFTEN, you do everything in your power to shut down the school, whether or not that is succesful is not the point KILLING at school is not the NORM
yes, and then they found out there was more shooting, and now they are saying police are not ready to say it was the act of only one person, although from all of the facts that are coming out like the type of gun used, it points to being only one person
That's very reasonable argument. But the fact is that 2 people were killed, with the killer still at large, and all they did was sending out an e-mail? Come on! There is got to be a better response than that. When I was in high school, we had drill for situation like this. When you hear a gun shot, lock the door, wait for the announcement. Why wasn't this employed in college?
Also about a month before in LA there had been a case of a Chinese shopkeeper shooting a black customer in the back after the black customer had assaulted the shopkeeper. The video from the instore cameras had been widely shown and while the shopkeeper was Chinese most African-Americans didn't differentiate.
Reading about this guy I hate to say it but I don't think there will ever be a way of preventing something like this. A lot of people talk about the need for responsibility and accountabilty but how does that stop someone who's going to kill themselves and take as many with them. The people who do things like this are narcissists who care about nothing but themselves and can't think beyond more than the immediate moment. Threats to people who already feel isolated and angry towards society will only likely set them off. As far as the racial issues I don't see how the killer being Korean makes much of a difference. Its not like being an angry loner is endemic to Koreans as there are plenty of others of all races. This guy was just an alienated guy with guns and a deep seated grudge against society who happened to be Korean. Its not like there aren't people like that in America of all races. I don't know how to get to people like that.
Of course not. But hospitals, large corporations, government functions all have the same drill. All I'm saying is that there are more things that can be done than just sending out a simple e-mail.
