I heard on CNN that they should have had a system in place that would send text alerts to students in case of an emergency. Sad day. +
They could have at least done that. Maybe more police presence? Maybe just cancel classes for the day? It seems there was a double murder on the campus. Possibly (though no one is sure yet) multiple injuries. If that's true...hindsight has nothing to do with it. That was just bad, bad decision making.
I heard a bit ago that the Chicago Sun-Times was reporting that the shooter was possibly a 24 year old Chinese national. Edit: wrong paper http://www.suntimes.com/news/343354,vatech041607.article
Apperantly the shooter had no ID on him, his fingerprints aren't on any databases and his face is now unrecognizable. I think they know who he is, but are trying to be 100% sure before they release the info.
Another weird pop culture coincidence...yesterday I watched Higher Learning for the first time since it was in theatres.
Oh great here goes the race issues again!!! 33 are killed right now, my sympathy goes out to each victims family. I'm an Asian American male, so please don't look at me like Americans look at an Arabian and think they're a terrorist. The more blame game and pointing fingers you play, the more tragedy like this happens.
I wouldn't worry about that. The DC sniper not too long ago was considered by many experts to be a white guy. Once he was captured it was a bit of shock to discover the sniper was black. Hatred comes from all races and social backgrounds. It's unfortunate.
I'm not questioning the actions of the school yet. Too early, w/out the details, to tell what they were thinking. I'm assuming they thought the 7:15 am situation was 'under control' and an isolated incident. Kind of like a murder at an apartment complex. You assume the murderer is either on the premises in a short radius and they're scouring the premises (ie the dorm) or long gone trying to escape (to another part of town for example). Personally I wouldn't feel safe until they found the person or at least a day passed, because then I'll assume after a day the person wouldn't dare stay in the vicinity. But I think people are underestimating the effects of a mass email at, say, 8:00am. It wouldn't be a futile message. News travels FAST when they close campus. Students will look for any reason to stay home. At Florida we get mass emails and the home page gets update about campus closures. During 9/11 I went to the bus stop. Another person there gets a phone call while we're waiting, and then tells us class is canceled. I go home and tell my roommates, like I'm sure everyone else there did. I called some friends too to let them know. It's like that saying, if you tell two people, and then they each tell two people, and so on... When we had closures due to hurricanes, most of the time we wouldn't find out until the last second possible. My phone would ring off the hook immediately because people are planning hurricane parties the second we find out class is canceled. I'm sure at least 1/4 of the people in transit would get the message before they reached campus.
Good movie but there were some things I didn't like about it. It aired today although I thought they would cancel it do to the shootings at V-Tech and the events that are portrayed at the end of the movie. They did something similar when 9/11 went down and Passenger 57 was supposed to air but it got pulled.
Probably won't become a race issue, but I can see this becoming an immigration issue. Conservatives are probably going to point out to the fact that the gunman came here on a student visa.
Quite wrong. That won't be as much made of that fact as you may think. Almost all conservatives have absolutely no problem with student visas in any way. We have a problem with those that break our laws by coming here illegally with no respect for our sovereignty.
2 Friends of mine were in the building while the shooting was takin place... One said that some people started fainting when they realized what was happening and that they might be the next to get shot...
