when you get a fone call from your mom in iraq, the last thing your worried about is putting her on hold and explaining to some moron teacher who DOESNT get it, why he cant hang the phone up.

Sorry, but that sounds so much like what you'd expect the old Soviet Union to be like.

'Rules' are made by people. People are falable. Even 'good' intention rules are rarely preconceived and pre-qaulified in a manner that makes them appropriate in all possible circumstances.

If you are going to enforce a bad or inappropriate rule be prepared for any normal human ... yes even a teenager ... to get upset with you.

We don't know exactly what the teacher said , we don't know exactly what the student said ... but on it's surface, this sound like a school SNAFU to me.

It's one of the stories where you wish you knew the truth.

I understand the kid 100%. He wants to talk to his mom who is serving the country.

From the school's POV they don't allow students to be on cell phones, it's a policy.

I tend to agree if the student would hve handled it correctly there would be no problem, but it sounds like (at least from the news) that the kid was a SOB when the teacher approaced him.

Bad situation, but like most situations if you explain yourself 99.9% of teh people will make an exception to a bad rule. I'm not sure if this teacher was the .1% who wouldn't break a bad rule, or if the student just didn't explain the situation.

And you would get punished too. And deservedly so.

The teachers have too much to do to go around and ask the kids the importance of every call. Every kid will say "but this call is important, it's my dad in Ohio" or "It's my sick cousin" or "my goldfish died". If you really think the teachers have the time to do that, then you just have no clue. They shouldn't HAVE to do that either btw, they have enough to deal with.

Just because it is lunch doesn't make it excusable either. I am sure the school does not want to deal with a whole cafeteria of ringing cell phones. If I was a student there I wouldn't want that. It would be very annoying and would crreate a bad atmosphere. And then of course the kids would keep talking on them as they walk down the halls, and into class etc. There are good reasons why they are strict with the cell phones.

I survived high school without cell phones. It's not hard.

And again, the mom could of somehow made arrangements with the school, and the kid should of handled the situation better.

"Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction to the teacher's request."
