MR. MEOWGI, you dont know the first thing about parents and their children. Teachers are not the family police also. Like I said, there are exceptions to every rule.

SSG, you also do not know how the teacher reacted to the kid. What if he was being an ass? What if the kid is generally a good kid? What if he lost his cool because he hadn't talked to his mom in a long time and didnt know when he would have the chance again. Being former military I know that you have to call when you have the chance. Its not like you can just call whenever you want. If I was calling home and a teacher was giving either of my kids **** about it, it would be their ass IF I made it home.

How do I know who he is talking to? I'm not taking his word for it. I'm not going to go around and ask every kid the importance of their calls. That's impossible.

He could of made arrangements. He didn't. Too bad.

He couldnt make arrangements, he had no way of knowing that she would call. You call when you can call, thats how it is.

Rules are rules. You don't bend the rules if your daddy is Donald Trump or your mommy is in the military (btw, it was her own choice to serve). If you bend the rule for one kid, you have to bend it for every kid or you would be faced with a lawsuit. That's our sue happy society.

All we know is the teacher asked him to hang up and he refused. A 10 day suspension is harsh. Something happened and none of us were there so we don't know how it got from point A to point Z.

He's given up on all youth because he knows people that had some bad experiences dealing with young kids.

Rules are bent all the time. For example, people can break their apartment lease to serve in the military.

Then take the call and face the consequences.

But don't blame the school for trying to create an environment where teachers don't have to go around and ask every kid who they are talking to and to make a judgement call on it's importance etc.

Oh yeah let me add. He should not have hung up the phone. Something had to have happened and that was unacceptable. And the punishment should be dropped. One day detention at most.

Some of my classmates were in Iraq before they got to school. I've heard small stories about things over there. If they had an opportunity ot call their kid and some unthinking administrator tries to stop that conversation, the kid has every right to be pissed.

There has to be an e-mail address or fax number to send our comments...anyone?

"Hey mom, I haven't seen you in a while, or maybe heard from you in a while and you are clear across the world. Maybe call back later when I am not so busy, you should have time, ask the General for special permission."

So rules are never broken? What if she is wounded in an attack and might not possibly make it? We are humans, not computer programs, even programs can handle exceptions ! Use common sense!

I feel for the kid, but he should have had to end the phone call. If he isn't held to the rules then the next kid will be on the phone with their brother down at the gamestop, and claim they are on with a parent in Iraq.

You do have to hold students accountable to the rules. If I was there I would have told the student he five seconds to get a number, or tell his mother to call the office. Count down to five and make the student hang up. Then go to the office and either allow him to call his mom, or let his mom call him there where he can use a land line.

Every student needs to know that the rules should be followed and certain people aren't allowed a free pass. The rules should be enforced consistently. If everyone had kept their head the student could have still spoken to his mother.

Isn't that written into the contract in the fine print? And if not, don't they have to pay a penalty?

The kid broke a school rule. Don't get me wrong he had a good reason to. The school went overboard on the penalty but without a penalty there would be no reason for the kids to follow the rules.

Good point on emergencies. I never thought of that. In an emergency rules should be broken especially one as a minor as this one.

Franchise, this is a no win situation. The kid probably would have laughed at the ultimatum. If the kid told the teacher who he was talking to, (like the article says he did), then inform the student that you will follow up on his circumstance and if it's true, act appropriately, and if false, again, act apropriately.

    Thank you!

I can't believe there are people even argueing about this. Have people just stopped using their brains or what. You are not friggin robots you don't have to just follow every command. Evaluate situations and adjust accordingly.
