Personally, I agree with Sam that the guy was a loon to be looking for excitement that way with a wife who looks like that... not that someone's looks reflect how someone is in the sack, but still! I guess I'm remembering when politicians private lives were private. Reporters knew FDR, Ike, and JFK had mistresses (plural in JFK's case) and didn't report it. It wasn't seen as pertinent to how they were as an effective politician. It was their private life. And I miss that aspect we lost when the press all seemed to turn into a search for the latest personal scandal, as opposed to what the subject was doing politically. But hey! Why am I making excuses for a Republican??

Lost in the shuffle of all this is that his opponent, Barack Obama, has renounced negative campaigning and thus far stuck to his pledge. This may hurt Ryan's chances of making up his deficit to Obama but it will likely have little effect as Obama is not going to make an issue out of it. Perhaps it will deter Ryan's people, who are notorious for slinging mud, from doing the same and they will go graciously.
While I don't support Obama (yet another in a cavalcade of cookie-cutter leftist Democratic candidates), I agree totally with what you said about Jack Ryan. That's too bad. It was quite entertaining seeing the regular conservatives commentators coming up with reasons why this sex scandal was markedly different from other sex scandals.

Well, in terms of the American taxpayers contribution, I do, this is it for the US. The rest of the rebuilding of Iraq will be done by other countries who have already made pledges, Britain, Germany, Norway, Japan, Canada, and Iraqi oil revenues, eventually in several years, when it's up and running and there's a new government that's been democratically elected, will finish the job with their own revenues. They're going to get in $20 billion a year in oil revenues. But the American part of this will be 1.7 billion. We have no plans for any further-on funding for this.
Actually, that was not listed in any of Ryan's defense of his actions. That's *your* defense of his actions. I do believe his supporters claim that he didn't break the law, which could be interpreted as that defense. His description of those places in his press conferences directly contradicts most of Jeri Ryan's descriptions in those court papers at the smoking gun except for one, and his account is markedly different in almost every respect except for the cities listed. I suppose that is the conservative way of respecting the sanctity of marriage.
Ultimately this is a dead issue....Ryan was trailing Obama significantly before this happened and is apparently dropping out anyway. Even if the Illinois Republican party wasn't on its heels becuase of the George Ryan scandal, I doubt they could have picked any candidate who could stop the big O with his crossover appeal.
