I remembered studying the bible in Hebrew the first time and finding that Jonathon & David wasn't quite the story I remembered in English. It said (literally) that David's love of Jonathan was far greater than the kind of love a man can have for a woman. It also described how warmly they would embrace...and yet...every rabbi I talked to about it gets very upset and says "they were just good friends." I wonder if the same Christians who believe in the "literal" bible actually ever read it in the original language (or order) it was written in.
What I learned of the Bible, the post you replied to was spot on. The Old Testament is in the Bible because it gives context to the New Testament. The Old Testament is a history lesson that talks of a coming savior and the New Testament is the fulfillment of that prophecy. Jesus made the Old Testament obsolete and that's why you don't see animal sacrifices and the such. I highly doubt that you follow EVERYTHING in the Bible because there is a lot in the Old Testament that is some pretty crazy ****. I feel the same way about the New Testament as well but that's another thread for another time.
"It's God's job to judge, it's the Holy Spirit's job to convict, and it's my job to love" -Billy Graham With that being said, Joel Osteen is a joke and is not respected at all even within the Christian community.
This guy and many like him do follow everything in the Old Testament. As far as they are concerned, that practice is called Judaism. And anything less isn't.
And can I ask you want context you met them in? I know several gay men and lesbian women and most of them have said they are gay by nature. I can't think of any off hand that said they just decided to be gay.
You have to pay for your sins, let's consult an expert: <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/0AKvRvL5r3A" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe> DD
Not the majority, but the ultra-Orthodox do it to chickens. I've seen it in two neighborhoods I lived in. Most think a donation to the poor is a good substitute for the ritual slaughter of chickens leading up to Yom Kippur. But some people have strong religious convictions that not following the order to the letter really pisses God off: <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/0xwu1giSLoI" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe> That said, most of the ritual slaughter in the bible is related to the Temple, which was destroyed (twice). The religious want it restored, and along with it, the animal sacrifices, the anointing of a king (no more of this Prime Minister nonsense), and having priests again to run the whole affair. Oh, and the temple needs to be built in the same place, where that pesky gold-domed mosque is....but who cares about that?
Technically speaking, it IS the rule. As to how many in the US and Israel actually do it...I don't know, but enough to upset animal rights people and SPCA type organizations...and embarrass other Jewish people. There are enough that do it that there would be a pretty big outcry if the nation tried to ban the practice. This is also a country where the same guys blocked traffic, lit garbage on fire and attacked the mayor of Jerusalem in his car...because the city kept a parking lot open on Saturdays.
Dude, if you think that David, the notorious womanizer who had seven kids by seven different women long before he saw Bathsheba bathing naked on a rooftop was a homosexual, then I've got some beachfront property in Kansas to sell you.
