Not sure if that's correct. Pres is... does the authority convey to the Veep?

It's an interesting question that probably needs to be worked out, however, the greater question is not whether the Veep can declassify info, it is: Did Cheney declassify the information and then tell Scooter to use it? If so, it should have formal paperwork to back it up and the NIE, or at least portions of it, should be available to everyone. If it is not available to you and I, it is not declassified. If it is classified the question becomes did Cheney tell Scooter to selectively use classified information in order to further the political agenda of the administration?

Furthermore, any declassification actions fall to the originating agency. Did the CIA declassify all or portions of the NIE?

These are questions worthy of a formal and impartial investigation.

In the meantime, Cheney joins Aaron Burr as the only VP to shoot someone.

for political gain? or to push back against a serial liar who was spinning a version of the facts that didn't fit w/ reality, ie, his trip disproved that iraq tried to buy uranium in niger story. it did nothing of the kind. in fact, the cia was more confident of the claims after joe's trip. it was state that remained skeptical. look there for your "leaker", if he exists.

As opposed to a serial Bush defender?? ;)

Look, the real story here is that Cheney shouldn't have used those bazillion deferments to stay out of the draft. Maybe he would have learned how to shoot!

We must ask the question... Were Whittington and Cheney lovers? There are rumors floating around that Whittington was shot in the Old Executive Office Building, flown to Texas on Air Force II, and dumped on the ranch. These rumors claim that the lovers had a bit of a tiff over the fact that Lynn did not approve of such relationships and was, in fact jealous of Whittington's closeness to Dick. As everyone knows, Whittington was a friend of Bush's and was appointed by W to the Texas Funeral Board. What role Bush played in this is unclear, but it is not beyond the realm of possibility that Bush was also jealous of the Cheney/Whittington relationship and had the FBI spy on the two until he could tip Lynn off to a probable tryst.

Again, these are all rumors, and I have not repeated the most sensational ones that deal with Cheney's "soiled shirt" and unique anatomy, but I and many others demand a full accounting of the facts. The best possible route for this is to have a maniacal special prosecutor appointed by Liberal judges after consulting with Ted Kennedy.

It is clear that the White House reports on this matter don't pass the smell test. In fact, they stink.

    LOL, rimmy!

Whittington's chairman of the Funeral Board (I know someone who knows him), and 78 years old. I bet the old guy is a better shot than Dick. Well, I guess that's obvious! Pretty bizarre. I hope Dick gets the SS folks to give him some lessons. Whittington probably would have... but not now. Hope he's OK. Damn, that's gotta hurt.

Was it man slaughter or reckless? Will Dick be sued?

And why was this 78 old man in the hunting activity? Is he still hungry for blood after all these 78 year of life? Maybe he's protesting Cheney's hunting habbit at the moment? Or were they actually hunting at the breakback mountain?

ROX correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure you will ;)) but from what I understand about hunting etiquette is it is always the fault of the shooter if someone is shot. Even with my limited hunting experience and from talking to seasoned hunters, it is the responsibility of the hunter to know at all times where everyone in their hunting party is. There is no excuse for shooting someone in your party. When you're hunting and you hit a person -- that's your fault.

So all this talk of it being Whittington's fault for getting shot is just BS. But I love how the press just laps it up.

Au contraire, I have no doubt the U.S. military was the better for Cheney's deferment. The latest debacle by the leader of the Gang That Can't Shoot Straight is just confirmation of this.

This is the **** that really makes me sick. I have no problem with hunting. I've hunted myself and my brother takes a couple of deer each season. Love the venison sausage!

But canned hunts are truly grotesque. And they say a LOT about the character of the hunters who take part. What a bunch of f-in pansies.

I bet Joseph Wilson and Richard Clarke are glad they were not able to make that hunting trip.

What's the different? It's not like you are lacking in food. You are killing for fun. The only difference between canned and uncanned huntings are that the canned one is easier. Well, with the weapons and equipments people have today, any kind of hunting were easy. Only the killing part will bring the joys to the hunters.

Exactly. And listen to how carefully worded the descriptions on the news were. They kept saying "Cheney, an experienced bird hunter", "Wittington came up on the hunting party without announcing himself" It took 24 hours for the lawyers to make the facts straight. AND, the secret service was there to provide first aid, why weren't they there to say "Excuse me, Mr. Cheney, you don't want to fire in that direction, Mr. Wittington is approaching."
