mrpaige, he would have been in the draft lottery. I'm a couple of years older and participated in the first one, broadcast live on network TV. If he was like me, he got a good number and wasn't called.
gwayneco, I could pull the many good things out of that column, but I would rather recommend that folks just read it. In my opinion, it's very complimentary. Of course, I don't believe that attorneys are the spawn of the devil.
That was the year I was born, so it's out of my personal memory wheelhouse. I thought one could get a student deferment, though.
They could, before the lottery. That's why they started it. Cheney got out (being older than me) by using it, and knocking up the wife when it was going to lapse, if memory serves.
Faos! God talks to you too?!?! So I gather that you concede the fact that Cheney is a detriment to the GOP ticket and needs to be replaced? Or is the reason going to be the health excuse?
Did John Edwards make an EFFORT to avoid the draft ? Would he have had the connections George Bush did to complete that task?
Edwards got a high draft number when he was a sophomore, but no one was drafted that year so it did not matter in any case. It's a moot point.
i would think w/ kerry's new farm boy persona it would be a "moo" point, you know, like a cow's opinion? it doesn't mean anything, it's just...mooo...
Assuming you're speaking of John Edwards, he had a high number in the draft lottery, and wasn't called. He didn't use every dodge available, short of shooting himself in the foot, to get a deferment, as did the older man, Dick Cheney. I don't blame Cheney for trying to get out of the draft and sucked into a war of madness, but you brought it up. Satisfied? That info was from CNN's Inside Politics, with Judy Woodruff, btw.
actually, i knew the details, and rather than score points i was just trying to highlight how idiotic it would be to try and contrast the two men's lack of service. neither served, and to try and parse the degree to which they didn't serve seems utterly pointless- surely there are better things to talk about. for me, military service has absolutely no relevance in this election.
I agree. However, we have a choice. Do we go with a Democrat who doesn't have a record, yet, as President? Or do we go with a Republican who has a record... a record of getting our country "sucked into a war of madness." Iraq.
