I'm wondering if more people may end up dead than from the tsunami tragedy? Last I heard was 100,000+ dead. Wasn't the tsunami tragedy estimated at 200,000 dead? This is just unfathomable and hard to comprehend. So many sad moments in life. Just the randomness of where you are born may determine your lot in life and whether you eventually live or die. Keep those donation posts coming! You can make a difference. Just read that the Haitian actor from 'Heroes' cannot find his parents and they may be dead. He says he hears they were okay but hasn't been able to confirm. Just saw Bill Clinton interviewed by Wolf and he was practically crying at the end of the interview. It made me cry.
The earthquake is way inland so there shouldn't be any tsunami affect. I find earthquake is the most devastating natural destruction because we don't have the power to prevent it. All we can do is build stronger structures to limit the destruction. It's a sad thing is that alot of countries out there don't have the proper building code to prevent for huge losses. I think Japan might be the only country that are ready for these kind of disaster since they constantly have earthquake.
This is so sad. I am broke from paying tuition, but I will text right now to donate through my phone.
It's tragic because the buildings in say.. California are earthquake resistant so the damage by even a 7.0 + earthquake would be as severe. On the other side Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world (as most of us know). The buildings aren't built to resist a disaster like that, which is why the death toll is so high. I really feel sorry for these people, these kind of things are horrible to see and worse to a country like Haiti which was already in moderate crisis of all sorts. I have donated 50$ already, looking forward to donating more when I can.
I've heard the death toll just spiked up to as much as 500,000. No way... That's half a million people dead and/or missing.
link it up, maestro. *edit nvm... that is just what matt "i don't confirm anything before i post it" drudge has up on his crappy website
Question, how do you distribute food and water to so many people without a mob panic situation occurring as people will be desperate? Do you just start air-dropping crates of food/water/supplies to get them something asap? Or, do you use military folks and set up stations? How do you do this in a timely manner? Surely, you cannot just drive aid trucks without protection or the trucks will be swarmed. It is a logistical nightmare. I hope they get stuff soon or I wouldn't blame them if they resorted to cannabalism...if it becomes that desperate. Maybe I've seen the movie "Alive" one too many times.
The military (U.S., UN, or otherwise) civil affairs division typically has to set up drop points that are heavily guarded and they oversee the dispensing of all materials. I think the Red Cross and other aid orgs usually enlist the help of paramilitary or military orgs to help with security.
I think Surfguy is comparing this tragedy to the tsunami tragedy in 2004. luckily this one was about 5 or 6 miles in, and tsunami warnings in Miami, Cuba and Jamaica have since been lifted... what I read about this one is that it was very close to the surface rather than miles deep within the earth.
I read earlier we are sending a few thousand marines to help with distributing aid. I remember in places like somalia where this was a problem and the gang leaders would confiscate and control the aid and it wouldn't get to the people who really needed it. sad and I hope violence doesn't erupt in Haiti
