this is the worst possible news for the poorest third world country on the western hemisphere. i have two friends who worked for the AP out of the Caribbean, and they said their everyday visits to Haiti were like going into a war zone... this was before the earthquake...
I just donated $500. I dare one of you to match or go higher. Come on, man. We have it so good here in comparison. I will probably make another donation later. I'd rather feel good about helping out those in desperate need than to hoard money that I don't have a dire need for at the moment. Of course, not everyone is in position to donate. But, some of you I know for a fact are. Those of you with jobs and good incomes...please help them out. Thanks! It might even help if we get everyone who donates to post in this thread...as it may inspire other Clutch BBS members to donate.
From MSNBC : "For those interesting in helping immediately, simply text "HAITI" to "90999" and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill" http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34835478/ns/world_news-haiti_earthquake/?ns=world_news-americas
I've got 10 friends in Haiti right now doing missionary work... they're all okay, luckily. I guess God had them there at this time for good reason.
They are saying "hundreds of thousands" have died. http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/01/13/haiti.earthquake/index.html
Personally, I don't think the question is "can or will you donate?" versus "how the hell can you not donate or do something to help? (unless you are financially wasted or something)". You can donate something to the tip jar...you can donate something here. Get er done!
Well done, I commend you. ...and you too. I sent 200 to Hope for Haiti earlier this morning...will probably send more later. This is going to turn out to be one of the most horrific disasters of our time I'm afraid, not only due to the strength of the quake, but also due to the lack of infrastructure and overall poverty of the country. Folks, do what you can, but also remember that there's needy people the world over, some perhaps in your own neighborhood. Don't forget them either.
At the end of every year I make it a point to donate money to various charities because I understand there is needs all over and it is an annual ritual for me (well...as long as I have an income and employment). I also make it a point to donate whenever a tragedy like this happens. That's how it should be for everyone imo.
Can't imagine being in the middle of that. Sorry didn't specify...the video below is of a 6.5 earthquake in Cali a few days ago. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lG5w7oo-vak&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lG5w7oo-vak&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
For those at work, check to see if your employer matches donations. We're donating to the Red Cross, so I just dropped off $40.
Good for you Surfguy. I'm going to write a check to the Red Cross right now. I've also contacted the group I volunteer with, Architecture for Humanity, to see about working on reconstruction.

Just a horrible thing to happen to people who have it bad enough already. I will certainly give what I can tonight when I get home.
