Clyde Drexler is just repeating what Bill Worrell says

If there wasn't a satelite delay, I'd love to hear Gene Peterson (yes, he's a homer who hasn't seen the Rockets foul in his entire career), but personally I love the guy.

I just can't stand to hear what happens before I see it. Gene Peterson is the Denny Crain (Boston Legal) of the NBA.

The difference between Bullard and Drexler, it appears to me anyway, is that Matt Bullard has made efforts to prepare, is aware of stats and standings and uses illustrations to diagram plays. Drexler does not do any of that and appears to be "just phoning in the story". Maybe I am wrong, but it just seems like Clyde just walked in and put on the microphone. That's why he falls back on cliches and repeating Bill Worrell's lead in comments.

Bullard has potential to get better and is already WAY ahead of Clyde. I'm sure the Rockets hoped for better from Clyde, but the knock on him coaching the Cougars was that he just didn't like working that hard. So now as a Rockets analyst, he doesn't travel with the team, just does home games. That kinda sucks, either do the job fully or don't do it at all. Just my opinion.

Exactly. The Rockets don't owe Clyde anything, and he clearly sucks at commentating. No one tunes into Rockets games to listen to Clyde talk, so I hope they aren't thinking he's some sort of draw. I'd rather Bullard does all the games, even though he has his problems as well.

In general, ex-players don't make very good analysts. I'd rather have an ex-coach doing the games, or at least someone who really understands and knows how to teach the game like Calvin Murphy. Is Don Cheney any good at this?

I saw Don Cheney when Dave Chapelle was doing some shows in town.
Me and my pals (true Rocket fans) yelled out his name and he acknowledge us.

so in defense of Don Cheney,
screw the Knicks fans, now they know that it wasn't his fault that the Knicks suck!

Don Cheney was a coach of the year in the NBA. recognize!!

Mario is horrible. You havent seen him talking after the game. He has a weird monotone voice.

I still stand on my belief that both Bullard and Clyde sucks as Bill's other half, but I'm thinking about how great they would be together. Bullard is more of a play-by-play guy and Clyde is more of a clueless/Bill Walton type. I think that would make for GREAT TV.

    AIR and GLIDE!

since calvin's never coming back i'll move my efforts to getting van chancellor back. he speaks funny but he's extremely knowledgeable, and he's quirky enough that bill can play off him a little like calvin. he did the post-game instead of elie the other day.

second choice is mike newlin who i always thought did an excellent job when murph was out. he's got a bit of a lisp but you get used to it.

I wrote something nice about Jim Pete for NBAtalk years ago, and he emailed me to say thanks, and offered to buy me a bottle of scotch. I had to be like, "um ... I'm 20. Sorry."

Great guy, though. Lost his email address when my old laptop was ruined during a flood.

Clyde could sit there and talk about how a jigsaw puzzle has him stumped and I will not care. It's Clyde damnit and I love him!

I don't mind Tommy because unlike many other "homer" commentators, he displays a knowledge of the game. Since you had LP in prior seasons, you should easily recall how terrible Rod Hundley and Ron Boone of the Jazz were. They set the standard for bad.

Back on topic. Clyde's OK...middle of the road as commentators go. I suspect but can't prove that a significant number of his critics in this thread don't have League Pass.

I never understood why so many posters had problems with Van Chancellor. But I've always preferred "coaching" types like him or even Mike Newlin. Jon Barry has a bit of that "coach" quality in his style. Too bad he's probably way out of the Rockets' price range these days.

I've only heard Jon Barry do three games and frankly don't see what all the fuss is about. He was fairly forgettable, talked about alot of things other than hoops. Not really any inside stuff either. If a former player isn't going to give some inside perspective, then get a sportswriter to do the announcing, or a coach as others have mentioned.

I also like Van Chancellor, although I never mention that out loud ;)

I marvelled at the way he would call out the play the rockets were about to run. He was very knowledgeable and sometimes was funny in a weird sort of way.

Barry doesn't have a lot of deep insights, but at least he doesn't sound like a moron (well, his Melo for MVP campaign is slightly moronic). He has a good sense of humor, and he knows how to interject relevant statistics. Drexler ... I don't think he even prepares before games. He has no business commentating; it's an embarassment. The Rockets are only doing themselves a disservice by retaining him in that capacity.

Clyde does suck, they should get rid of him and put bullard and worrell together for every game - those two arent the greatest commentators but atleast they have chemistry...

I think Worrell is more comfortable around Bullard, he's always complementing Clyde, like "oh, that's just like how you used to do it Clyde" etc etc... yuck.

But around Bullard he makes the funniest comments that crack both of them up, e.g. during a Clippers game Boniface NDong threw up an ugly brick and they were going on about it, and Bullard goes "what a bad shot from Ndong... and Worrell goes "yeah, that was a ding dong"... he loves making fun of player's names which is hilarious, and it's probably politically incorrect or even offensive...

And when they did a post game interview with Tmac and he was wearing only his singlet, and Worrell goes to him "you gotta get me one of those"... and Bullard goes "if I see you wearing that I'm leaving"...

I have heard on numerous occasions that when Drexler was the basketball coach at University of Houston he never attended a practice and only showed up for the games.

Drexler may have been a talented player but he may not be much of a person in any other respects.

Van Chancellor was great. Calvin Murphy was not as great intellectually, but more fun. Clyde is just chill.

While I don't think Clyde is the best of TV guys, he was nice enough to buy myself and a group of co-wokers a round of drinks this past Saturday at Sullivan's off of Westheimer. We left Smith and Wollensky's after our Xmas party and met up there around midnight. He was more than happy to take pictures and talk Rockets basketball, so for that I give a gold star. :D

BTW- He is married, right? Dude had 3 gorgeous "fake" women in tow all night.
