Yes, which is why I am betting they wait until 2015 to take care of Parsons.

Didn't the Celtics win when they first acquired Garnett and Allen?

Didn't the Heat make it to the Finals when they acquired Lebron and Bosh?

So yes sir or ma'am we can contend this year.

Sure, you think about positional needs, but positional need is still secondary to actually getting top value. The Rockets have a realistic shot at a title now, but no more so than a handful of other teams-- OKC, GSW, MIA, IND, LAC-- so it's not like that the Rockets cannot use another elite or nearly elite player in order to put their talent level over several of these other teams.

Winning a title is really hard. You have to get full value for your assets.

Asik is the likely the most valuable trade piece that Houston has right now, you don't give up a dollar for 3 quarters just because one of these quarters happens to play backup C and fills a "positional need" after Asik is gone. No, you get the best value that you can get for Asik and then try to find a backup C somewhere else if need be.

That Boston team had talent out the wazoo, you had big 3, and then Rondo and Perkins, and then vets PJ Brown and James Posey who had the best post season of their lives and essentially became KG and Pierce clones when they played. Heat getting to the finals or anywhere is more due to LBJ playing as dominantly as MJ ever did, 45 mins a game and averaging a trip double.

Those two teams are generally anomalies rather than the norm for contenders, so expecting the team to contend already in it's first year together isn't reasonable. For me this season is already a win because DH and Harden had a season of working out and we uncovered the gem that is Tjones to fill the PF spot.

Both Harden and Howard have been to the finals before, so they knows what it takes to get there IMO. Yes they are young but they are considered veterans. Therefore anything is possible if they are able to build great chemistry.

Seems like one common exception is center. It's so hard to find one ; teams frequently put somebody there who isn't really a center. We were there a couple of years ago.

The only reason people say this is because box scores can't accurate judge centers due to deficiencies in properly judging defensive value. But if you use more advanced metrics, you can definitely find incredible value in centers that put up pedestrian counting numbers. And the Rockets most certainly are into advanced metrics.

great post makes sense, but you undervalued rondo playoffs performances

    - he has averaged triple double doubles in series

-he playoffs he was assigned to guard Lebron James & wade did a good job, he has been on all defensive teams a couple times with Dwight Howard

-In playoffs he turns in to a different type of floor general, defensive beast leader on the floor, that's where rondo gets his SUPERSTAR hype from, basically from
Playoff respect. "Which is earned not given"

    - I'm a rockets/Lin but you can't compare a PROVEN playoff beast who handles pressure great to Lins regular season numbers. Rondo and Lin shouldn't be in the same sentence if you are talking about who you want to be your PG going into the playoffs

Try is not good enough when you are contending this year. Hoping to find a backup C is not good enough. We had this problem last year. Defense collapsed when our C went out because we had no backup.

If Morey wants to trade Asik purely for best value regardless of roster needs, he needs to be sure the need created by losing Asik can be addressed before the playoffs.

Perhaps Morey has a bunch of irons in the fire in this regard and isn't too worried about it.

Rose is now officially out for the season.

Full update: Rose underwent successful surgery to repair his torn medial meniscus; out for remainder of season: http://t.co/ZbyjWh1WJT
— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) November 25, 2013

Wonder how this plays into the trade landscape?

If Deng was available before you got to think the Bulls are seriously looking to move him now. No way they compete for a title without Rose.

I could see Asik playing into a 3 way trade for Deng to Houston and Noah being shipped out to another team to cut salary.

    Welcome to the Tank Bulls?

I actually think moving Noah and Deng makes a ton of sense for the Bulls... Especially if they can get back Asik & get a very good young piece from another 3rd team. You come back next year with a much more youthful but still a very good team around Rose, Asik, Gibson, Butler, Boozer and whatever piece they get back in the Asik deal.

    A deal like this-

Rox send Asik to Bulls & trade filler to Denver, Get back Deng
Chicago sends out Deng to Rockets, & Noah to Denver, Get back Gallinari & Asik
Denver sends out Gallinari, Gets back Noah & trade filler from Houston (Casspi/Brewer/ or D-Mo)

Obviously this is a VERY randomly thrown together trade, but this is the KIND OF deal the Bulls could very well pull off and come back next year with a much more youthful, but still a top 3 team in the East. Noah at this point, can fetch them a very good rebuilding piece, and Asik can be had for a player that is likely to leave this Summer anyways. Asik isn't Noah, but he's younger, healthier, and does much of the same things.

Reading some bulls blogs and they're ready to hand over Deng for a non lotto first rounder or a young player.

Would you do DMo plus a first for Deng? I think the Bulls might. Then you could still add Milsap for Asik after 12/15.

That would be some wicked depth.

Noah is making $11.3m against the cap and playing at his peak. He's one of the players that could actually net a first rounder for 2014. I wouldn't be surprised if they pretty much dismantle the team with Rose out for the season and an unknown amount of time for him to return to form.

Not to mention, once they start picking up young talent and picks, it will be a couple years before they develop into legitimate NBA caliber starters.

Noah's very good, but he's a luxury on a rebuilding team. I expect them to move out Deng, Boozer and Noah as well as several other players.

If your team is going to be awful due to youth, you might as well go all the way and try to snag as many picks and young players as you can. Rose is only 25, so he's got time to get back to speed while the team rebuilds.
