i just remembered it's Grady Middle School...on google map check 5417 san felipe to get an idea of what it looks like and where it's at. If anyone lives nearby maybe they know or can check how busy it is.
Honestly, RV, it would be nice if we could find a covered court somewhere to play at regularly, but the courts at Pin Oak are really the best we have managed so far. Everywhere else either has slippery floors, broken goals, no nets, double rims or is crowded either frequently or often enough that we have days when we don't really get to play together. It got so frustrating coming out to try to play every week (back when I was more frequent) and not being sure if the court we chose would really allow for that. So if it were up to me, I say stick with Pin Oak. That place is ideal save for the non-covered aspect. It sucks right now because of the heat, but I can deal with the heat. I just need to work my stamina back up. Also, it's possible to get rained out, but that hasn't been too big of a problem so far (I think it's just happened the one time since I've been going to Pin Oak to play with these guys). But if others are open to finding a better court, I'm down.
Spotts park. Covered. Extremely crowded. Plus, court is slippery due to dust and sand. Has a kick ass sand volleyball court. Plenty of d-bags too.
I was just kidding... and I know him personally. You guys ever try this place? Roberts Elementary http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...411236&spn=0.001197,0.002366&t=h&z=19&iwloc=A
Grady has the crappiest surface ever, and is usually crowded on weekends. As RR said, this is the place we play at because its available, the court surface is ideal for preventing any horrific injuries, and no double rims.
i still think you guys should form a 8-10 man squad and join a local rec league that way everyone will be able to play once a week in an indoor squad even if its just for one game its always a lot of fun. then we can analyze game afterwards and decide who was rafer-ing it out there
That's really funny. I haven't lived in Houston for over 20 years and I was just getting ready to suggest Roberts. They definitely used to have nice covered courts. And a skateboard bowl!
I say we just all stop with the helpful suggestions of new hoop spots. Besides I like our place, even if all I do is suck wind and throw up air balls in 100+ degree weather. Its secluded and we all get a chance to run at least a few games. Not sure about this weekend tho, I'll probably be a no show for now but it could change by game time.
there's always some court in houston that's secluded and not well known..i think it's just a matter of time before y'all find a better spot, but one has to keep looking to find it...can't hurt. Also, i still think there should be a list of where everyone is coming from. Ultimately i think it's important to have a good court and also a large turnout.
No offense, but most people are fine with the spot we have... and most of the spots people end up suggesting are places we've already heard about or tried to play at. We play there for now, if somebody finds an ideal court... I don't think we're opposed to moving there, but this is really the only place we've found that guarantees us court time, which ultimately is the most important thing. It really is only the harsh Houston summers that make the court unreasonable, in a couple months it'll be cooler.
Yeah, the court surface is the biggest thing. So many courts just go with the concrete and even on covered courts it is just impossible to keep them clean enough so they don't become slippery. Once a court becomes slippery, even if it is indoors and air-conditioned, it sucks to play on because people can't really put their all into it for fear of getting hurt. And to answer RV's question, I come from Deer Park. It's roughly a 30 minute drive for me to the court, but I don't mind. That's the biggest reason I don't like playing at a court where there is a chance we won't have free reign of the place. Driving ~30 minutes to get to a place and playing maybe 1 or 2 games because it's crowded really sucks. I don't want to play with a bunch of unknown jerks, I want to play you lot of known jerks. SCK excluded, of course.
Everything about the current court is just fine aside from the weather. As moes said, that'll change soon. The surfaces, rims, backboard, and availability at these other suggested court won't, and I guarantee each of them lacks in at least one of those areas...they always do. So for now let's all just leave well enough alone, and if you can't take the heat, park your pansy ass on the couch and have a Laguna Beach marathon or something.
Ok. Lawrence Park in the Heights. Looks like 1024 W 7 1/2 street. or Love Park in the Heights. I remember Jeff saying that one. Root Memorial Square, the court in front of Toyota Center finally decided to fix that rim, and add nets. Emancipation Park near Hutchins and Dowling. (looks scary) Sunny Side Park just South of Reliant. Yeeah.... Those are parks in and around the loop that I found on Google Maps. The place we play will be fine fine fine in October.
So will there be refs and mandatory time outs too? Jeeeesh. Come out and play. Stop b****ing about it. I'm talking to you RV6
