More than Les's willingness to spend, more than any new player(s) we acquire, our chances for a championship are almost completely dependent on Harden playing defense. Especially in the playoffs. If he doesn't do that this coming season, I'd vote for getting rid of him.

This. Cp doesn't give a rats ass about houston or his team mates. He's happy selling his soul to a devil like Cuban.

what bothers me more about parsons' offer was that it was cuban that gave it to him. he very likely went in knowing that a high percent change we'd match and was trying to hinder us from signing a big time fa. smart strategic move on his part. secondly, it annoys me that a guy that failed us in the post season, talked trash and didn't back it up would get such an offer pisses me off.

that's like any of us at work, completely blowing a project and then getting a promotion and raise at the end of the year. sure i get that he has potential and he was going to get paid. his deal and hayward's deal were ridiculous in my opinion.

Role players give us less of a shot at title. Morey did the right thing and swung for fence instead of bunting, your strategy. His draft picks and trades are likely better than the free agents you think we missed out on.

I think we need to understand that TJones is 22
and probably won't be victimized by LaMarcus like that again
[I would hope we can coaching him up that much]
LaMarcus hurt us more than Lillard IMO.
    Even with our 'bad defense'

Which I look to see improve

We need to just improve defensively

Lin and Asik were gone no matter what
We were not going to pay them 30 million dollars to stay, IMO.

how has the team been gutted?

asik sulked and sat out last season. he only came back near the end of the season because he knew he had to showcase himself if he wanted to be traded.

a first round pick is a good deal for a malcontent.

with lin, he's been replaced by johnson and the rockets used his salary space on ariza. that's an improvement.

    parsons isn't gone, yet.

Yeah. We replaced Lin ($15m) with ariza ($8m). That's a $7m difference. Divide by parson's 3 years and that's $2.3m savings per year ($3.5m if you assume parsons opts out after 2 years). So really you're paying parsons $12.7m per year at most or $11.5m. Those are his value. Not matching him does not make sense to me since we're called anyway and this is our chance to add to the team, before matching. Also if you take a step back this year, Dwight really is more likely to leave. I just don't think Aldridge or Love will come as a free agent so you're really hurting yourself for a small chance to improve. Plus it will screw mavs and that's what we all want too amiright?

Yes. The Rockets have nothing to lose if we match Parsons. It will only get better. Otherwise, we will be a worse team because he is a glue guy for everything. We need him.

Honestly .. . Defense is the main improvement
I think it is the difference between 1st round fodder and championships

Perimeter defense specifically and even with Beverly in a starting role now I think you need a taller 2 or 3 defensive specialist

Greg Monroe is an RFA dude; can't give him an offer sheet because we aren't sure if we are matching Parsons.

If we are going for Monroe, we have to wait 3 days.

There are so many threads about this. Read first.

A 16 and 10 player yet nobody offers him a contract for Detriot to match. The NBA these days is pretty much just a popularity contest.

well, that's how morey operates. he shoots for the stars. he got two already. he struck out on a 3rd, but look what we got instead at that value.

don't think for one second morey isn't planning more moves.

    he's always a step ahead.

Great article. Losing Asik doesn't hurt much in my opinion thanks to him probably being a net negative last season due to his attitude and his "injury". The Twin Tower experiment alone probably cost the Rockets 2-3 games by itself. As far as Lin, we will see what his departure means for this team based on who we grab for a backup PG but a competent ball-handler, passer and consistent shooter would mean an upgrade over him thanks to his inconsistency and turnovers at critical moments.

I think we can count on Howard being just as good as last season if not slightly better due to health and familiarity with the team. Harden, Parsons, Beverly should all improve slightly. I expect a substantial leap from Jones as far as consistency and focus which should translate to his defense. Now we have added Ariza who is a fantastic fit as the rangy, long SG/SF who plays very good defense and is a dead-eye catch and shoot three point shooter that has been arguably this team's biggest need lately.

Bottom line, if this team gets decent talent at PG and C/PF after signing Ariza and matching Parsons it can and should win 60 games and beat any team in the league in a seven games series.

Parsons gone, Ariza, another player brought in, Pelicans lottery pick to use as trade chips and try to retain flexibility for future free agent classes. Typical Morey move.
