That's reasonable. I think the coaching staff is just not really comfortable with Lin. They don't quite have the trust in him and he's going to just have to earn that trust fair or unfair.

I like this young Houston team, I really do. I followed Lin here but ended up liking the team with their potential. They reminded a lot of the post melo Nugs few years ago.

But if the coaching staff do not have any interest in developing Lin as a player (ie. getting valuable minutes down the stretch in a close game, continue to get minutes when things may not be going his way, utilizing his strength to make the team better rather than making him adopt to a role which diminshes his role ) - then for the betterment of the franchise, they need to trade him.

They got the unexpected windfall in a pg they wanted in Harden (i know he is a sg, but he is being utilized as pg), so isn't Lin now dispensable? As long as they marginalize Lin on the bench, he is going to continue to suck. They clearly have a different view toward Lin then harden in that they will keep harden in there even if he is playing poorly vs Lin who will get yanked at first moment of poor play.

Lin was signed here not as a back up but with a promise of being the starter, or as Morey put it, one of the "foundational" piece for the future. That is why many of you are so upset because he will billed as a key player and he hasn't met your expectations.

I'm sick of McHale saying Jeremy will be okay. I do not want Lin to fail but if he is going to, at least play enough minutes to prove to me he is not the player I thought he was.

This is what bugs me about the whole Lin fiasco. Regardless of whether Lin is a good player or not, why would they pay so much to get a player if he has to earn their trust to gain playing time? Shouldn't the trust be there before they make that large "ridiculous" financial commitment? Did Morey and Les not discuss with McHale about the acquisition and make sure they were on the same page and have a plan for his role for the future?

I realize Lin is a big marketing draw from Asia (I mean hochan does game highlights in Chinese for god's sake) and he fills the void that Yao's retirement left behind, but if Lin doesn't play - then they are gonna end up with a backlash (you think LOF here are bad here).

It just doesn't make any sense. Have the front office given up on Lin as well? Is McHale just defying them and doing his own thing? I wish the Houston media would be as inquistive as NY media and ask these questions.

I get your point and I do wish that Lin stays with this team, because when this team is on, they are fun to watch.

My main problem with the coaching staff is not that they are making Lin play a certain way (although I do think they need to let him handle the ball more), it's that they are cutting his playing time when he needs these valuable experiences to improve as a player? Is TD that much of an improvement over Lin at he plays 30+ minutes or OT in a close game than Lin? Less than 20 minutes a game?
I am absolutely flabbergasted by the clear lack of confidence this coaching staff has in Lin. Lin will never get better as a player with coaching's support and trust.

It's chicken and egg. I don't think he can 'earn' their trust because they've already made up their minds about him... more than likely... they made up their mind about him last season when they cut him and he ended up at NY. They ended up with major egg on their faces then, I'm sure Morey would have chewed them out like... how did you guys not see the potential here?

They haven't given him a chance from day one. It's been all about Harden. And I don't think it's going to change. Lin is human also, I'm not sure what you expect him to do?

He needs to learn to be a spot up 3 point shooter and play in a system that's the complete antithesis of what he does? And he gets benched even when he plays well. Last night and Portland OT as perfect examples.

I personally think this goes back to last year's abbreviated training camp. I don't think the coaching staff trusted him enough to advocate for keeping him then, but I could be wrong.

Even though I know it's about guaranteed contracts or trade flexibility, I still couldn't believe the Rockets chose to keep Flynn over Lin. I'm sure some will argue that we would have never found out what we had until he succeeded under someone else's system.

But the fact remains that there must be some trepidation regarding Lin from this coaching staff. And I think it's reflected in the way Lin plays...not entirely, but he does seem to doubt himself.

NOONE here can deny the fact that this coaching staff has little trust in Lin as a player. It is sooo blatantly obvious. They are blind to the potential that Morey saw when he decided to shell out the poison pill to snatch him from NY.

Believe it or not, Lin looks to be in even a worse siutation than what he had in NYC and the dysfunctional organization that is the Dolan led Knicks. At least the fan base believe in him, unlike here.

Well Morey cut Lin mainly. I remember Morey said that Les the owner was pretty mad at him during the whole Linsanity thing. Chewed him out and such.

Any ways they have given him chances, he just has to play a new role and improving his shot will work out for him in the long run. He knows that. But he hasn't played so well that he can't be benched from time to time.

I don't even think he cut him because he was bad but it came down to contracts and such. Most people here actually wanted to keep Lin too.

Here? You mean here on CF or do you mean here as in Mchale and his coaching staff?

Here on CF. When he was cut I remember a lot of members kinda going "Awwww." and really because Flynn was so very bad. People would have rather had Lin. I think Morey cut him because of contracts and Flynn's was more 'tradeable' than Lin's and not because they thought he played bad.

Like I said it before, I still hope that Lin can develop into a good player with the Roxx. Unfortunately, it is not looking good at the moment.

Found out via Chandler's twitter that Jeremy's closest friends (kevjumba and Ryan) are at Jeremy's place tonight. Jeremy has good friends to help and support him. Hope they're at the game tomorrow. Probably they're playing video games or discussing plans for a new video.

Actually, I think Lin to Lakers would not be bad idea - especially if Rockets no longer believe in Lin as a foundational piece ( I'm taking that the fact the McHale/Sampson continue to marginalize Lin by limiting his playing time without any recourse from the management is a reflection of the Rocket's organization as a whole no longer regards Lin as one of the pieces of the future).

First he has a coach (probably the only one in the NBA) who believes in him. Second, he will be coming off the bench with less pressure to perform as a result. And last, will finally get to play in a system he is vastly comfortable with. Still costs a lot of money to the lakers, but less than Gasol.

Getting Harden for Houston has made Lin dispensable. The coaching staff will not be forced to play a player then never trusted. Gasol is a good proven big man who can provide veteran presence and can still contribute. Sure the Rockets will lose their asian presence (bye bye HoChan) but really, long term, Lin as a bench a player would not have generated that much enthusiasm anyways.

It could be a win win situation for both franchises and the players who are clearly unhappy in their current role. I used to think that it was ridiculous but the more I look at it, the more it makes great sense.

I'm not sure Lin to Lakers will be any different than it is now. Kobe is better than Harden and might demand the ball too.

I share the same hope as you. But honestly, I really don't think he will get the valuable experience he needs at this age sitting on the bench. Plus his confidence level is plummeting. You could see that Jeremy was pissed last night - saying he was NOT disappointed in his effort last night (almost questioning why he was taken out). It looks like he doesn't know what he needs to do to gain the coach's trust.

No but the expected role will be different. He will be treated more as a back up pg to Nash. And I think he will love feeding DH and Kobe for easy scores and learning from Nash.

And the double team that DH will require will allows him to drive in much more easily. Ahhh oh the possibilities.

I am not a Lin fan. If anything, I am a NOF - Numbers Only Fan and I intensely dislike it when people use "the eye" test or say subjective things that cannot be proven or disapproven like, "TD fits better with Harden, therefore he should start!" without any attempt of empirical evidence.

One common theme on this board is that Toney is a better defender than Lin and/or that Toney is a better PG than Lin. That's just wrong, wrong, wrong. Not all of you think that of course, but there's too many people here that do and it's dangerously coming close to becoming an "accepted truth" because of group think.

The current truth that is closest to reality is that Jeremy Lin is not the best player on the team. He is the 3rd best player on the team. That is according to RAPM. Net RAPM values:

    Harden +3.96
    Asik +2.08
    Lin +1.02
    Delfino +1.01 (only ~230 minutes)

No one else on the team has a positive RAPM!

Toney is a -2.33 (note the minus sign in front of the number, in 260 minutes)

In terms of defense, again according to RAPM:

Asik is the best defender (3.90)
    Delfino is second (.77)
    Lin is third (-.13)

    Yea our defense is bad.

Why did I just spit out RAPM numbers? They are extremely good at predicting future performance. (see http://www.nbastuffer.com/component.../term,Regularized Adjusted Plus Minus (RAPM)/).

As a reference point, all players with a RAPM of 2+ is generally considered all-star level. Last year, Harden was at +4.4. Asik was at +2.4. Lin was at +2.2. Toney was at -3.9.

Why would Lakers offer anything worth a penny for Lin right now, in fact why would any team in the league offer anything worth a penny for Lin at the moment. stop dreaming, Lakers LMAO at Jeremy Lin for Gasol.

Solidz...here is another + +. Jeremy is use to playing under the bright lights and big stage. He feeds off the crowd's energy. Lakers provide the screens and spacing.
