Yes it could be if we had any reason to believe that he wouldn’t lose athleticism gaining weight. He doesn’t have a wide frame to pack on muscle mass, so at his best he’ll probably add 20-30 lbs which would still leave him as someone who will be dominated by nba players. Evan Mobley can’t hold down the 5 on his own and he already weighs much more than Chet. I think Chet is a severe gamble.

It’s fair to have questions, I just don’t see it like that. He will gain strength, he’s maniacal in his work ethic. But he doesn’t have to gain 30 pounds to be elite. He profiles as a 4 more than a 5

Is he really a better athlete anyway?

What are we using to count who is a better athlete?

How is he a better athlete?

What can he do athletically the Banchero cannot or do much better?

    Faster and more vertical explosiveness.
Paolo has better feet and stronger.

How do we know he is faster and has more vertical explosiveness?

Banchero has great vertical explosiveness and better feet is an athletic trait as well.

    Paolo isn’t explosive vertically.
He’s a good build up leaper, but not quick off the floor.
Absolutely having quick feet is an athletic trait.
Chet has better feet defensively and better laterally, along with quick hips and better hand dexterity. Another athletic trait.
Paolo is a solid athlete, specially for his size.
    Chet is a tick above.

Paolo’s skillset sets him apart more so than athletic ability

Defense and rim protection is the last things a team focuses on in a rebuild. The first part of a championship rebuild is to develop an elite offense. Then you go to work on the defense.

That's why drafting a rim protecting, rim running big in the first round is a waste of a pick.....UNLESS that player also does other things like handle and shoot the 3. Like Holmgren.

To put it into context, check out https://www.nba.com/stats/players/t...PlayerPosition=C&CF=GP*G*50:MIN*G*15:MIN*L*25

Among all centers who played at least 50 games and between 15 and 25 minutes per game, Sengun is tied for 3rd place in steals and 5th in block per game. In top 10 the next youngest players are 25 and 22 years old respectively.

Of course you cannot project directly to 30 minutes or you could question the relationship with number of fouls. But he is obviously beating competition at a very young age, and there is reason to think that these numbers can translate well.

Banchero has an very good second jump and is the more functional athlete right now in using his skill.

Smith is probably the more determined and naturally blessed athlete.
