I expect Morey to trade DMo for second round picks before midseason trade deadline. After waiving Ohlbrecht&James, signing Cooley and Cannon to long term minimum deals are good moves.

Couldnt we use part of the room exception to sign Cannan? Avoiding to cut Smith.

    Would Howard Take Less?

Do you think Howard would be willing to take anything less than the max if it meant ensuring that we acquired role players??
    Seems logical to me
Isn't that what the Heat did?

Doc Rocket hinted at that either in his tweets or in a post here..can't remember which. However, don't expect Howard to take more than possibly a couple hundred thousand $$ less than the max.

No, they initially agreed to all take a little less to make sure they could afford all 3 of the superstars. I'm sure Dwight would give up a little bit of money if it meant signing Durant. He's probably not too interested in taking less to keep Olbrecht.

Also doubt Morey would even dare ask him to take less to keep a guy like Anderson. Doesn't want to offend him.

I wish Dwight would just offer it really.

DWade took a paycut. Can't remember but I think it was around $500,000 or so. And I thought Lebron and Bosh took a little haircut to make the money work as well. But not for sure. I am sure DWade too a cut.

I think DMo would be traded for more than that. I understand where he was drafted and how he performed last year, as well. Though, I don't know if DMo is the guy we will trade. Not that he is the perfect player for Dwight, but Dwight is the perfect center for him and could bring out the best in Dmo (which, he still is a very high potential kind of guy). If we do trade him, it will be for an impact player now.

Agree with this completely. Its all about setting the Rockets up to be able to jump on an opportunity for a 3rd star. Have to stay flexible.

Also agree that Danny Granger is a prime target. Expiring, good talent and can play with Parsons as a stretch 4 in a Howard anchored team.

Agree that Lin will be shopped first before Asik. *IF* we are looking at Granger and wanting to move Lin, it might have to be a 3 way trade. Maybe get Detroit involved.

I think the Rockets hold onto their "room exception" to use to "fill a hole" if they move Lin or Asik.

I dunno... I mean I guess some haircuts could save you money depending on the place.

I don't think what Lebron got was a "little" haircut.

Lin + Jones for Granger as a temp PF. It's about accumulating the right assets in preparation for an Aldridge or Love trade later on.

Potential trade package of Granger + Asik + Motiejunas + draft picks for Aldridge or Love.

The Pacers look like the perfect trade partner if you look at their roster and signings. They need a backup PG. Watson was done as a backup two season ago.

Could the Rockets rope in Detroit Stuckey (expiring) or CharlieV (expiring) into the deal? Rockets still get Granger, Lin to Detroit and either Stuckey or CharlieV to Pacers. Something along those lines.

    Had some fun with math....

2015-2016 Estimated Cap: $64 million (The NBAs estimate for 2014-2015 is $62.1, so it's not outrageous to assume another $1.9 million climb in the following year).

    Assuming the following roster

    Howard 22,359,364 (Actual salary)
    Harden 15,719,063 (Actual salary)
Papniko 900,000 (Estimate based on previous deals)
    Jones 2,489,530 (Team option)
    Dmo 2,288,205 (Team option)
    Canaan 900,000 (Team option)
Asik 12,561,969 (Cap hold - 150% of previous salary, Bird rights)
Lin 12,561,969 (Cap hold - 150% of previous salary, Bird rights)
Parsons 1,833,025 (Cap hold - 150% of previous salary, Bird rights)
Beverley 1,181,348 (Cap hold - 150% of previous salary, Bird rights)
    Cap Hold 550,000
    Cap Hold 550,000
    Cap Hold 550,000

    Total Cap Use 74,444,473
    Projected Cap 64,000,000
    Excess Cap -10,444,473
    Aldridge 16,543,800
    Excess Post LMA -26,988,273

    Assuming we:
    1) Renounce Lin and Asik
    2) Trade BOTH DMo and TJones
    3) Pickup Team Option on Canaan
    4) Retain Bird rights on Parsons and Beverley

    Howard 22,359,364
    Harden 15,719,063
    Papniko 900,000
    Canaan 900,000
    Parsons 1,833,025
    Beverley 1,181,348
    Cap Hold 550,000
    Cap Hold 550,000
    Cap Hold 550,000
    Cap Hold 550,000
    Cap Hold 550,000
    Cap Hold 550,000
    Cap Hold 550,000

    Total Cap Use 46,742,800
    Projected Cap 64,000,000
    Excess Cap 17,257,200
    Aldridge 16,543,800
    Excess Post LMA 713,400

    2015-2016 Roster
    Beverley / Canaan
    Harden / ?
    Parsons / Papniko
    LMA / ?
    Howard / LMA

Still have vet min and room exception to fill out the roster.

That might be enough. 788k for Canaan might be enough to get him to sign long term deal. You know Morey wants to lock him up. And he seems like he wants to be signed. That might be why nothing has gone down for the Rockets. If they can lock up Canaan first by lowering Howards salary just a couple of 100k then do it.

I'm confused as to why Howard wouldn't be able to sign for the max w/o cutting someone. Looking at the Rockets current salary: http://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/HOU.html it is $43,075,658. Subtract Royce White ($1,719,480) and Thomas Robinson ($3,526,440) puts Hou at 37,829,738. The Dwight max = 20,515,178 according to http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/03/max-contract-scenarios-for-2013-free-agents.html. Add that and it equals 58,344,916. Although someone would have to be cut to sign Canaan for more than the minimum, correct?

You aren't adding in roster charges. Any team with less than 12 players must add a roster charge equal to a rookie minimum contract (about .49 million this season) for each player less than 12.
