Anderson has not much chance to show off his skills last season so other teams may not be aware of his potential, hopefully he clears waiver and we can re-sign him. Thanks Bima for your explanation in the cap situation of the team in such a professional manner and also very patient to the noobs like me. Learn a lot here.
Basically, when a player is waived, he passed through waivers over a 48 hour period, during which any other team with the cap room to do so may claim the player. If no team claims the player, he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Any team can sign the player at that time. My pleasure. I enjoy seeing the Rockets fan base become more educated on cap issues. The only thing for which I have little patience is when those who don't really understand a cap issue try (and fail) to explain it correctly to people who are just trying to learn. It propagates misinformation and confuses people, making my "job" a lot tougher.
Humm wonder if we can pick up Daunthay Jones or Delonte West as back SG for the vet minimum they be good additions imo
Assuming the Rockets have to waive Anderson and Ohlbrecht to sign Dwight, and further assuming that they use the Room Exception on one more good rotation player, and that the Rockets don't make any further trades, I don't see the Rockets pursuing too many other players, since I think they'll have the required 13 players on their roster (in order of salary): 1. Dwight Howard 2. James Harden 3. Omer Asik 4. Jeremy Lin 5. [Room Exception FA Signing] 6. Terrence Jones 7. Donatas Motiejunas 8. Francisco Garcia 9. Chandler Parsons 10. Greg Smith 11. Patrick Beverley 12. Isaiah Canaan 13. Robert Covington Of course, it is a distinct possibility that further moves will be made, but it's also a distinct possibility that the Rockets could stand pat after using the Room Exception.
Nice one Bima. And here's the depth chart for your team... PG Lin, Beverley, Canaan SG Harden, Garcia, Room Exception SF Parsons, Garcia, PF T-Jones, D-Mo, Covington C Howard, Asik, G.Smith A swing SG/SF would be a nice FA signing for the Room Exception. Someone who can shoot lights out and defend. Any ideas?
The warriors renounced their bird rights for Jarret Jack. I doubt he can return to their team and I don't think he will sign for the room exception here. We don't have one and, yes, it would have to be renounced in order to complete the Howard signing.
I like Corey Brewer from that lot. But now I'm thinking Delfino for the room exception to play at the 3. Move Garcia to the 2 and to cover for Delfino at the 3 when he's injured. Can Garcia play the 2?
I know Bima answered this, but let me take a longer stab at it. When a player is waived any other team can take him along with his current contract. The order of that selection is usually worst to best team. So (for example) if the Lakers waived Kobe, the Pelicans would get a chance to pick up his $30 mil expiring at the end of this year contract before the Heat get the option. If nobody bites on the existing contract, the player has 'cleared waivers' and is now a free agent and can sign with any team at any price/terms agreed upon. In the event of clearing waivers, the old team still has to pay the player the old salary (possibly less the new contract). But the old team is off the hook if somebody picks up the waived players contract. At least that is how it used to work in baseball.
FYI: The Rockets should have at least one avenue to sign Isaiah Canaan to a long-term deal, even if not quite as lucrative as Parsons's. Right now (before any free agent signings can begin), the Rockets have 12 players on the roster. Even if additional cap room is created to make room for Dwight (e.g., waiving Anderson and Ohlbrecht), each of those vacated roster spots will be replaced by an incomplete roster charge in the amount of $490,180. There must be a total of 12 players, cap holds or roster charges on the books prior to determining cap room available to sign free agents. So, assuming that Anderson or Ohlbrecht (or both) are replaced by an incomplete roster charge, once Dwight is signed, he will become a player on the roster, thus creating cap room equivalent to the amount of one roster charge ($490,180). Therefore, even if the Rockets "don't save any room" for Canaan, they could still use that tiny bit of CAP ROOM to sign Canaan to a three- or four-year deal starting at the rookie minimum (same amount) and maybe having a fully guaranteed second year and partially or non-guaranteed third and fourth years. The order of operations here would be as follows: (1) Clear room for Dwight (2) Sign Dwight (3) Sign Canaan (4) Sign Garcia, Casspi and anyone else It is not known if Canaan would accept such a deal, but the promise of a potential two-year full guarantee may be enough for him to accept a long-term deal without much guaranteed on the back end. Something to think about.
He'd slot in around 9 or 10, everyone else moves down. The Rockets STILL have their Room Exception to use on a good player.
