In a recent interview, Morey said that if the Rockets don't land an impact player, they would not use the cap room to make a few small signings that constitute small improvements like some teams did (NJ is one example when they signed Farmar, Petro, Outlaw, and Morrow).

So, my guess is that they may well just keep their cap space and use the flexibility for a possible in-season trade or for the 2013 offseason. The only kind of "smaller deal" that I can see them make are one-year contracts, which is what several teams did with their cap room in the 2011 offseason for the purpose of keeping their flexibility.

I hope they hold true to that but given last season's signing of Dalembert, I'm not going to hold my breath because I think most would constitute that signing as a small improvement signing even if that was at a reasonable contract. Personally, and I don't think I'm alone, I'm tired of the moves to stay afloat.

CH - I've read that a 'portion' of 2014/15 is guaranteed, but have seen no details as to how much the buyout would be, or if this final year has automatic vesting based on some criteria of games played or productivity.

Any details on the final year of Scola's deal? The only real source I've found is:

    From Feigen's Chronicle blog:
“He had agreed to a deal worth $47 million over five years. The $11 million in the fifth season, 2014-15, is not guaranteed, but become incrementally more guaranteed based on incentives (numbers of games played and the team’s success) through each of the first four years of the deal.”
