    Here's another thought:

Will Yao hit another three pointer against the Warriors?

Anyway, a large part of the crowd should be cheering for Yao, since a lot of the American chinese population lives in the Bay Area. That should help the Rockets a bit. And a lot of lispy-voiced men should be cheering for John Amaechi.

This will be the seasonal home loss to Golden State, thanks to horrendous defense.

    Golden State: 109
    Houston: 99

Last season with the Jazz, Calbert Chaney's shooting really killed the Rockets. He's doing his usual things at Golden State. Whoever's guarding him has to pay him a certain amount of respect or else...

Looking forward to seeing how Mo Taylor will do tonight. Nice to have some depth back and have a second low post player to match with Yao.

It will be interesting to see how Yao will do against Erik Dampier. Dampier has had a great season so far, he leads the NBA in rebounding if you can believe that and leads the NBA in double-doubles. It should be an interesting center matchup.

Golden State is very good on the boards so how Yao and Cato do reboundwise should be a key factor.

What's the point of saying where you are in the line? Does it magically help the Rox win or something?

    Knee still bothering Van Exel

    Warriors notebook

SAN ANTONIO -- Warriors point guard Nick Van Exel started Tuesday against the San Antonio Spurs, somewhat surprising since it was only Friday when he said he was going to take some time off to rehabilitate his left knee.

Van Exel scored 12 points in 28 minutes against the Spurs and had brief flashes in the third period when he was getting into the lane and hitting his trademark floater.

Still, when asked afterward if the knee felt better, he said: "Not really. It still is hurting."

Van Exel rode a stationary bike before the game and then told coach Eric Musselman he could go. Van Exel had arthroscopic surgery Oct. 20 and returned for a game against Atlanta on Nov. 5. But after playing 46 minutes against Detroit on Nov. 12 and 43 minutes against the Los Angeles Clippers on Nov. 14, Van Exel said he needed further rehab.

When asked at that time whether he need to work on the knee for a week or a month, he said: "Definitely not a month."

Musselman said beforehand that he was going to have to more closely monitor Van Exel's minutes.

As for his status for today's game at Houston, Van Exel said: "I don't know. We'll see how it feels."

    Road doesn't get any easier
By Dave Del Grande, STAFF WRITER

SAN ANTONIO -- Like San Jose State opening its football season against Nebraska, Florida and Ohio State, the Golden State Warriors can't wait to take on someone their own size.

The question is: After having lost three road games to NBA superpowers, are the Warriors big enough to look even the Houston Rockets in the eye?

It's on to Houston for the second game in two nights after the Warriors, stubbornly yet predictably, got worn down by a vastly superior San Antonio Spurs club Tuesday night, falling 94-81 at the SBC Center.

For the record, that's one road loss apiece to the Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings and Spurs, arguably the top three teams in the league.

At this point, Jason Richardson believes he could qualify as a one-man BCS committee if David Stern needed him to fill that role.

"The Lakers, no question," he responded when asked which of the three giants stood tallest in the early going. "They have some problems, but once they get to know each other, they'll be the best team in the league."

Losers by 15 points in L.A. and just two Sunday in Sacramento, the Warriors used a 10-0 flurry to close within five of the Spurs just past the midpoint of the third quarter. Nick Van Exel, a big question mark even in his coach's mind less than an hour before tipoff because of a sore left knee, had two of the five hoops in the run.

But Tim Duncan ended a stretch of six consecutive Spurs misses with a layup and an errant 11-footer by Van Exel opened a bad six-pack by the Warriors, and before you could say Rasho Nesterovic, the margin was double digits again and the bus started revving its engine.

The punch-counterpunch was Hagler-Hearns-like. Again, Richardson provided the on-point commentary.

"They kind of figured us out," he said. "They figured out what we were doing defensively. And they figured out what we were doing offensively."

If there's a silver lining in the wind-blown clouds between San Antonio and Houston, it's that the Warriors are 0-3 on the road against teams they should be 0-3 against.

Surely, they have to be ready for someone else. Anyone else. Right?

"Not when the other team is 7-3 and playing as good as any team in the West and has two premier guards and one unbelievable center," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said of the Rockets.

"We get Houston," added an equally glum Van Exel. "Right now that's one of the best teams in the league."

In the end, Musselman pointed to three things as the Warriors' downfall Tuesday: shooting (44.7 percent overall), shooting (30.0 percent on 3-pointers) and more shooting (62.5 percent on free throws).

"You play the defending champs in their building, you have a small margin for error," he said. "We made some mistakes tonight."

Erick Dampier didn't make many. He hit eight of his 14 shots and led the team in scoring (17) and rebounding (11).

But Duncan (21) and Spurs guards Tony Parker (19) and Manu Ginobili (19) all outscored the Golden State big man as San Antonio shot 50 percent and an incredible 58.8 percent (10 of 17) from 3-point land.

Let's see little ol' Houston do that.

NOTES: Asked how his surgically repaired knee felt during the game, Van Exel replied, "There's always problems with it." ... The lefty, who sat out the Sacramento game, had 12 points and four assists to show for 28 minutes of action. ...

Van Exel's backup, Speedy Claxton, received his championship ring in a pregame ceremony that featured Duncan and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

We're one of the best teams in the league?!? This is so cool that we are getting this much respect.. and think guys, we havent even started clicking yet. Wait until we get everyone back, and Yao, Steve, and Mobley actually play the basketball they are capable of playing.. Dynasty? hehe.. no.. Strong team? definately! We just need to be humble.. lets hope that the Rockets dont get cocky and become the team that is hated by all.. i.e. Lakers.. hehe
