You know, Yao is labeled as soft and gentle - and while that's not a bad thing for a man to be - it's not going to earn you a lot of respect in the NBA or American culture were bravado counts. Yao lacks that, and it some sense it's why people have a resistence to him. The sight of him bent over clutching his head while the game went on wasn't pretty. If Yao had pushed the guy, or elbowed him afterwards - he'd have a different perception.

And I'm just explaining what is - I'm not even advocating Yao become a prick. I've fine with Yao the way he is. But if he wants respect, then he has to understand what respect comes by in our culture. Personally, I'm just happy if he helps us win.

and my ignore list just keeps on growing. Seriously, do you think calling someone who you don't know a racist says anything good about yourself?

and maybe, just maybe, when yao has won everything and still be the gentle giant he always is people will say this is the way it should've been all along. and david stern and likes won't have to worry about the nba's thug image anymore...

What if the culture itself is the wrong way to promote the right image, which could be heavily lack of sportsmanship and fairplay?

Respect? He will get respect if he wins...that is all it takes.....you don't have to be mean to get respect, you can earn it by playing hard and winning.

Plenty of nice guys have torn the guts out of opponents...Magic Johnson was not exactly mean, now was he?

Respect comes with leading your team...if Yao averages 25+ and 10+ rebounds and gets to at least the WC finals, he will have everyone's respect.

And truthfully, he should care less if he gets anyone's respect, just win baby !!

more power to him. I'm not saying Yao should be x, y, or z. I'm just saying if he wants respect from Americans - well, I mean, c'mon, we're a nation of hockey fights, WWF, baseball fights, and so on. Being a gentleman in sports isn't America. Even Michael Jordon taunted his opponents. Barkley? Shaq?

Think about it, the last gentleman we had who was perhaps the greatest center of all time also doesn't get respect - it Hakeem. Does that make everyone a racist? NOOOO!

I respect Yao for being a gentleman. But that's his choice, and if he is going to be humble, then people are going to over look him and not respect him. That's the whole point in being humble - is that you don't look for respect!

But let's clarify one thing....anyone who wants to say Yao doesn't get respect because of race needs to take a serious look at what their saying considering that most of the NBA is black!

By the way - Plenty of Japanese / Korean baseball players get "respect".

Maybe the problem isn't Yao, maybe the problem is American cultural values.

But at the end of the day, it doesn't change why Yao doesn't get respect...and that's because he's just comes across as too nice on the court.

You seem to really enjoy and be excited about the block since you can't stop talking about it.

Oh by the way, was that an attempted block or an attempted lay-in? Have you figured it out already? Need more help? Let me know if you do.

What a moronic comparison. If you still do not know, baseball is practically a non-contact sport and you don't have to wrestle with your defenders, shove your opponents, use your elbow to fight for position, etc.

You don't get respect in baseball the same way as you get respect in basketball or football. Every sport is different. You seem to be the only one who can't see it.

Maybe he does not give a damn about the "respect" from others, maybe he is only concentrating on winning the whole thing. Yao patronizing, yao patronizing.... hahahaha

I like your post...good post for a Rookie and anybody who calls you a racist is an idiot and is a racist themself....This isn't about race. Its about what the NBA has become. Its about Gangstas who care more about their look rather than their skills. They spend hours infront of the mirrors and in recording studios rather than at the freethrow line or wieghtroom. They want everything without working for it. It scares them when they see Yao and how hard he works at his game and doesn't do all the flashy stuff. I wish we had more players like him.

Also, since this was brought up has anybody noticed how the rockets entertainment at the games has become more hip hop too. I can understand the pllayers going Hip Hop but why the entertainment. I've had season tickets for like 14 years and it seems every year it gets more towards what the palyers like. The launch crew, etc is all directed towards people who like Hip Hop. Can't they come up with somethign during timeouts and halftime that everyone can like? Its getting a little old .....

Well, it doesn't seem he cares about respect. Yao looks like he has a lot of self-respect and is an admirable sportsman. Seems like he has it all together. The problem really isn't Yao - it's with the YOF's who are upset he doesn't get enough praise and are calling everyone racists.

I guess the YOF's are looking for some respect.

Just curious if you are the opposite of YOFs. To be certain and no guess. ;)

You are on the site for a while as a pure Yao hater. Everyone knows it. Since Yao becomes more important in the team each day, your life becomes more sad everyday.

Anybody realize all the hate on Yao and the NBA from ESPN. Oh look Rockets-Knicks highlights. On to the 3rd Quarter! Thanks for skipping all of that. Hey look its Nate Robinson blocking and fouling Yao(yet they don't care that he fouled him) Oh look lets do the replay about 20 more times and show how high hes jumping. Ooooh. And now a random 3 pointer by Luther Head. Highlight over. On to the one hour coverage of yesterdays boring Monday Night Football game.

Are you an ET or what? If there is a racial thing, it's not only between black and white, it's between all the different races. Is it possible that some blacks discriminate people from other races?

I agree.. after all, this is what people these days like to see.. the like to see weird things.. they dont care about REAL basketball anymore.. they dont care who dominates and who wins games for his team.. they care about people dunking from the three point line and 5-9 guards having 50 inch vertical... that's why we should ignore stuff like that and focus on real basketball because when we end up the world champs, ESPN and others will not show the Nate Robinson and the Marbury highlight...

but still, ESPN is really pathetic.. I mean, how can u possibly pronounce Vspan's name as "VAsalla" ..wtf ? where did they two A's from ?? and they didn't do better on the last name.. they were like "Spen-los" or something like that.. it's pretty sad.. :(

I say NewYorker is the one who are looking for some respect on an internet bulletin board because he can't get any in real life. You are the one who'd do anything in order not to lose in an internet debate afterall?

NewYorker, give it up. You are wasting the bandwidth of this website to keep defending yourself. Everyone here with minimal reading skill can tell what kind of poster you are.

    You are a broken record.
