    ROCKETS SHOWED HEART!

They managed to propel their way to victory today and Yao Ming has been consistently having 25-30 point ball games and when he's on like that, the Rockets are usually successful in winning and also trusting more in Yao because it gives them a good post presence and an inside scoring threat. They were turning the ball over like a Fruit-Rollup but Dallas was throwing some silly passes to the stands to. I'm VERY glad we acquied Jim Jackson in the off-season because he's been shooting the lights out the past few games and that was VERY key also in our two hard-earned victories over two top western teams. If Yao continues that tear he's on and Francis and Cuttino pitch in with 15 each and not turning ball over too much, we'll be making some damage in the Wild, Wild, West. Very nice "statement" win today. Like JVG said though, no statements being made, just play consistent basbetball for the rest of the season into the playoffs.

Yao *alone* will never beat fronting D ... since he will never be faster than smaller players, very simple physics. It takes a team effort.

The reason TOs are so important is that it's a facet of the game you have much control over. On some nights, your 3s can go down almost all the time. on other nights, you might have trouble making layups. But EVERY NIGHT, you can take care of the ball by just being smart.

FG% is certainly important. But it's just something that you don't have much control over. Teams go through hot and cold shooting streaks. Reducing TOs will help you stay in the game during the cold stretches.

    Houston 101, Dallas 98

By MICHAEL A. LUTZ, AP Sports Writer
    March 7, 2004

HOUSTON (AP) -- Yao Ming scored 29 points, including five in the final 45 seconds, and the Houston Rockets snapped a six-game losing streak against the Dallas Mavericks with a 101-98 victory Sunday.

The Mavericks lost their third game in a row but almost fought back against the Rockets, who had to overcome 30 turnovers and a season high 20 steals by an opponent. Dirk Nowitzki nine steals, an individual season high against the Rockets.

Yao's basket and free throw broke the final tie and gave Houston a 95-92 lead with 15 seconds left. However, a 3-pointer by Antoine Walker with 4.2 second left cut Houston's lead to 98-97, before two free throws by Clarence Weatherspoon and one by Cuttino Mobley provided Houston's final points.

Michael Finley's missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer for Dallas.

The Rockets held small leads for most of the game. The Mavericks rallied from a 90-85 deficit with five straight free throws by Steve Nash to tie it at 90 with 1:01 to play. It was tied again at 92, before Yao gave the Rockets the lead for good.

Nash led Dallas with 22 points and nine assists. Nowitzki scored 18 points and Finley had 16.

The Rockets held a 50-47 lead at halftime, and led 70-68 heading into the fourth quarter.

Houston stretched its lead to eight points twice in the third quarter, the last at 70-62 with 2:58 to go. However, the Rockets committed four turnovers and didn't score again in the quarter and Dallas pulled within two.

Six early second quarter points by Clarence Weatherspoon and a pair of 3-point baskets by Jim Jackson, helped the Rockets take a 46-38 lead with 4:04 to go in the half.

    Notes

The Rockets play four more home games before finishing with 11 of their final 16 on the road. ... The Mavericks also beat the Rockets six games in a row from April 11, 1982, to March 15, 1983. ... Houston is 23-3 when shooting 45 percent or better from the field, and 13-23 when they hit under that mark. ... The Mavericks are 24-14 against teams with winning records this season, after going 27-17 in such games last season. ... The Mavericks are only 11-19 on the road this season after tying for the league lead with a 27-14 mark lastseason.

I know this is Rockets board. But I can't help it.

Has Dirk peaked? I have some high respect for Dirk. I don't remember any previous game that Dirk went for only 1 rebound.

Top Ten Things You Gotta Love About Today's Game

    1. Yao getting an offensive foul
    2. Steve's block on Nowitski
    3. JJ's prolific 3-point shooting
    4. Steve's NEAR ONE HANDED JAM off the Mobley alley-oops (even though Steve missed this one and JVG nearly lost all his hair, it still looked awesome)
    5. Yao coming up clutch
    6. Spoon attacking the basket
    7. JVG cursing on National TV
    8. Dan Majerle not dressed in either a Phoenix or Heat uniform
    9. Time-out footage of the Power Dancers
    10. Beating the Dallas Mavericks

    :D

How did Rox overcome the T30 TOs and win the game? The answer is rebounding: a 48:35 advantage.

    Individually, Yao and Spoon 10 apiece;
    Nowitzki 1, Bradley 2, Walker 3 and S Williams 5.

We are SO LUCKY to win this game today. I have never seen a team give the ball away that many times and win.
