At the start of preseason, everyone is saying that we're going to play phx style offense. Run and gun. But now, we're last in the league in fastbreak points. Wow!

Im 100% sure that a trade is going to happen in the near future.

That is what Magic and Bird were all about. They dominated the game by recognizing what a defense was doing to them and getting the ball to their teammates where they could make a play. They didn't force it. If 2 defenders were shadowing Bird, he wasn't calling for the basketball and trying to dribble around with it. He would go stand in the corner or at the arc way outside the 3 point stripe and create floor space for McHale and Parish and room for the guards to penetrate and finish or dish.

When you look at our team, there is no reason that we shouldn't be averaging at least 100 points per game. We have to start making the opponents make choices on who they are going to defend and then get the ball to where the opponent is exposed. When you have Yao, Tracy, Scola, Francis, and Battier/Bonzi/James/Head on the floor, there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be able to score. The defense doubles Tracy and shadows Yao, they should both go to the opposite side and Francis and Scola should be able to run the 2 man game ALL NIGHT LONG, or Bonzi should be posted up on the opposite side and be able to DOMINATE his matchup ALL NIGHT LONG.

For this to happen though, McGrady has to help create those situations by taking the initiative and leading his teammates into that game when he sees the defense is totally shadowing him with two defenders before he crosses halfcourt.

Steve Francis, for as horrible as he has been so far, can still make plays. And Steve Francis can work over a pick and roll pretty durn good. Francis is not and never will be a stand still 3 point shooter. He can hit one once in a while but it's not his forte. Now, this year, under a different coach though, we are seeing the same scenario unfold, that is to say, our point guard having to stand outside at the 3 point line to try to create space for McGrady to work. And it simply doesn't work because the NBA is too smart for it. They will force the ball out of McGrady's hands and there is our point guard standing there with it out at the stripe and we are working right into low efficiency offense. McGrady is 6' freaking 9" tall. He can stand a good 6-8 feet outside the 3 point line and step into the pass coming out from the interior and can that jump shot when he is wide open at a very effective clip. I'm talking about when he's wide open and can purely step into the shot. And that's where we need to get as a team, to the point, where we can use McGrady as a decoy when they shadow him with two defenders and force the defense to have to adjust because Steve and Scola/Hayes are driving them bonkers with the PnR or Bonzi is tearing them a new one off the post ups. Then you can swing it back to a wide open McGrady or you can throw it to a trailing Yao for a few dunk shots and force the defense to have to overcompensate. We should have defenders flying around all over the court with the offensive skills we have. But most of the time, they are forcing us into end of the shot clock garbage shots, or McGrady is forcing a shot, or we are getting a turnover as we stand around and try to get it into Yao.

McGrady has to recognize this and lead his teammates. It's just that simple. McGrady is still the primary leader on this team and his attitude is going to effect the team chemistry a whole lot.

I'm not in with the guys that say he has no heart. He gutted it out last night, hobbling around the court. He probably shouldn't have been out there for most of the minutes he played. He may not be the toughest dude in the NBA, his body is not built to be the toughest, but he is very tough. Rockets will never be a fast team as long as they have Yao. They need to understand this in order to build their identity.

Wow...I have to second that this is the longest post I have read here! And I thought that some of my earlier ones were long.

But like the other poster said, some good analysis here. But, the fact that even you realize Adelman is waiting for McGrady to buy in all the way, says what I am saying about the coach, he has no control over the team. He's a wuss. Okay, that was harsh. He's soft like cotton. better?

Exactly my thoughts during the game. I had no idea what offensive scheme they were using last night or even if they were using one at all.

Right now this team defines mediocre, and the "new system and new coach" excuses are wearing really thin. It might be merciful that this team is currently not going to the playoffs, because they don't have enough talent and intensity to beat anybody who will be going there.

How quickly things change around here. Just a few short months ago, this team was being heralded as one of the Western Conference elite simply because Morey signed a bunch of guys everyone here liked. Well, the problems with this team go back years and have more to do with how it was constructed and the philosophy (of lack thereof) behind those decisions. JVG understood this which is why he took the approach he did with this team. That's why he was relentlessly blunt about how good they were or weren't. That's also why he rode their collective asses every day and every game. All he did last season was get 52 wins out them when Yao & Tmac missed significant amounts of playing time. Les Alexander wanted to pretend that JVG was the reason holding them back so he goes out and gets Adelman to play "exciting" uptemp ball which will put the fannies in all those lovely red seats at the TC. Which brings us to the here and now. And if Adelman fails to overcome the inherent problems with this roster, then he will join Rudy T & JVG in the Rockets' scapegoat line.

I had this feeling that the Detroit game was fools gold. This is a .500 team, I saw very little energy out there wearing red and white (and not much talent either). I would move Brooks to the back- up behind Rafer, i.e. start him in the next game if Rafer isn't back. Can he be worse than Francis, James, or Head? Let's find out.

Yes he can be worse. Did you see how he matched up last night against Devon Harris? Harris isn't tall either but he looked as if he had a good 4-5'' on Aaron. He has the skillz but I don't think that will be enough to overcome his physical liabilities especially on the defensive end. I see that SF3 hasn't lost his ability to turnover the ball...

Getting Adelman and letting JVG was a big mistake. You can't just change the game plan in the middle of the process. Adelman is not giving the players any plays to run. That's what a coach is supposed to do. He just sits there the whole game. Post up Scola and Bonzi, get Luther wide open threes (he can't make them when he's guarded), and get TMac to take it to the basket.

I have to agree with this but it's still on the coach to draw up the plays. Yes I agree send Yao and T-Mac right or left and force the double teams and then throw the outlet pass to the weakside where you have multiple scoring threats.

Im telling you. This is an injury that just doesnt go away. Its like when you teara tendon, and it heals, but the rest of your life its always "tender" and "pops"....thats what happens when tmac injured his kneecap two weeks ago. (not the ankle)

Rockets will never be a fast team as long as they have Yao. They need to understand this in order to build their identity.

B.S.....running the ball doesn't require all 5 men on the floor running....3 or 4 will usually do..........Yao gets the rebound and kicks it out....it is up to the other players to then run the ball............not pull it out and walk it up like tmac does every night...........

you're right. and he's right. we will never be a fast break TEAM with yao, that is our strategy shouldn't be to run and gun at all cost thinking we can win the footrace at the end. but we CAN and MUST run the fast break, push the ball ahead, get 3on2 and 2on1 easy buckets with the speed that we do have.

yao is a GREAT outlet passer from the defensive rebound and when playing small with luther/skip/james (not specifically all on the court at the same time) we HAVE to be able to beat teams up the floor.

Tmac laughing after the game is like a slap in the face to all the fans that CARE about the team and don't get played MILLIONS to play a game. He should take this alot more serious becuase we as fans take this very seriously...we pay big money to from our below average salaries just to see this team....not to mention the 4 dollar hotdogs and 4 dollar fries....or the 7 dollar beer...Tmac can go to hell...or back to Orlando

If I were the manager, I will trade T Mac first. Why? Look at his ugly performance in the court, no passion, no ambition, no toughness. Rockets would never pass the first round if he is here. Besides, he earns too much from the team, actually Morry should trade for better player combination via selling Tracy.
