More like Rockets could not buy a three in the 2nd half. I don't get the Rockets...if you start bricking 3s why not settle for a few 2s?

If you are talking about torocan, then sorry buddy I rather read his posts any day over yours and I'm sure a lot of ppl would agree. torocan have always been informative and very reasonable. On the other hand what you just said was completely RUBBISH.

Which is why I didn't just note PPP Allowed, I also noted DEF and Defensive rating which are statistics drawn from other methods.

As for the positional benefits, this is also why it's useful to look at comparisons to other players who play their position.

Defensive Efficiency of Power Forwards (10 games, 15+ minutes played)
    Patrick Patterson - 1.17 (40th out of 62)

    http://www.hoopdata.com/defrebstats.aspx?team=%&type=pg&posi=PF&yr=2013&gp=10&mins=15

And the Steve Novak analogy was specific to Synergy PPP Allowed. Taken in a vacuum any individual defensive statistic can show anything you want. However, let's say you took other stats as well into the context...

    Steve Novak

    PPP Allowed - 0.78 (59th)
    Defensive Efficiency - 0.69 (51/55)
Defensive Rating - 111 (Worst on the team)
Defensive Win Shares - 0.3 (4th Worst on the team)

These stats all point to Novak being a poor defender. IE, the statistics aren't unanimous, but the majority argue that Novak is a poor defender.

This is NOT the same situation as Patterson, where ALL the major advanced statistics point to him being a poor defender. So, maybe your eyes tell you something, but every advanced statistic and my eyes are telling me something else.

    Patrick Patterson

PPP Allowed (0.92) 255th according to Synergy
Defensive Efficiency of 1.17 according to Hoopdata (worst of the starters, 40th of 62 PF's with 10+ games, 15+ minutes played)
Defensive Rating of 108 according to Basketball Reference (2nd worst on the team)
Defensive Win Shares - 0.5 (Worst of the starters, and worse than Delfino, Smith, Morris and Toney Douglas)

So, the Novak example holds up... IF You are only looking at Synergy in a vacuum. If you look at the other advanced statistics as well for context, then no, Patterson is NOT the best defender on the team in my opinion...

You will be benched if you take a mid range shot and don't hit it. Our offense is strictly based on a statistically superior strategy in a fantasy game. http://www.clutchfans.net/bbs/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I really don't understand why they don't let Lin shoot the 20 footer more often. Clyde even said in the game tonight that he seen Lin shoot that pretty consistently and I think that should be enough of a threat to open up the driving lanes a little for him. Everybody else on the team at least shoots over 30% on their 3's.

Hey, don't bash torocan just because you don't understand what he said. Do you like to bash ppl who is more knowledgeable than you? He is obviously way more knowledgeable than you based on your past posts.

Rockets just didn't show enough effort tonight. They looked like the team that was playing back to back.

My thoughts about the Rockets amongst the West teams. The only teams that Houston is simple overmatched is OKC and to a lesser degree San Antonio. Just watching this game, minus Paul of course, is that the Rockets can hang with the Clippers. Look, this same Clippers team demolished Memphis yesterday, but would have loss to the Rockets if the team had just made just a few (3-4 3 pointers) and 3 or 4 more points off the charity line (not very much to ask). My only gripe about the team's current slump is that it's the same problem over and over again....can't hit free throws and when the 3s are not hitting...they keep jacking more threes instead of moving closer for a 2 shot. Yes, a good post up player will level games like this and give the Rockets a better chance of winning when 3s aren't going in. The streak will probably end tomorrow..thanks to that stupid jinx thread though.

We're starting to look a little too much like last year's Knicks with D'antoni (post Linsanity)

It's okay, just ignore. People usually resorts to ad hominem attacks when the intelligence in the discussion doesn't match up. We all know how knowledgeable torocan is. Just let the "vets" ride their elitism.

On the real note. The one thing I notice most in this game is Rockets never adjusts their game. Maybe they haven't learned to do so or not been taught due to their inexperience or what not. It was clear as day to me that Clippers saw small ball and 3s from the Rockets, so they adjusted with dominating post plays after post plays with Crawford and Griffen (Because we really suck at defending them). And when Rockets try to pack the paint and do more help D, Crawford goes and downs multiple 3s in a row. That's when everything goes down the drain and you could see that the team was lost in confusion for quite a while.

What a horrible game...Parsons, Delfino, and Harden going iso too much and/or not looking for the open man. Stupid TOs espcially by James. Horrible transition D. Horrible help D. Lack of picks for our guards and if there was one, it results in a moving screen violation. And to top it all off, no hustle no energy.

Only Mook, Lin, and Smith played team ball.

There's so much reactionary comments in every game thread.

Like, 90% of the game thread goes like this:

    --------------------------------------------------------------

"Player X had a bad game. Bench player X, release him, send him to the D-league."

"We suck at position Y. Trade for player Z. Sign for player W."

    "Lin sucks."
    "Lin is great."

"We're never going to make the playoffs!!!"
"We're so close to the 4th seed!"

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Don't forget where we started at the beginning of the year and what the expectations were -- bottom 3 team, lottery pick, exceeding expectations if we sniff .500.

The biggest gain for us this year is to build chemistry, experience, and too see what we got with our rookies and our starters. If we accomplish that, then this year would be considered a success overall.

I said Patterson was one of the Rockets team defenders, sliding over and playing the pick and roll. The statistics you posted do not address those points specifically.

Further, the Rockets coaches have discussed his ability at handling the pick and roll and playing team defense. Indeed Jonathan Feigen has written about it a number of times.

Ironically Synergy is careful to say they only gather information and do not rank it circumstantially to make larger procmations. We can agree to disagree. I agree with you concerning using a series of measures... The problem is that the measures you are relying on are not specific to the P&R and team defense.
