but if you throw the ball in the air and then they foul you it's an off the ball foul and you get a free throw and the ball. that's why you get rid of it so their only choice is free throw and the ball or let time expire.

and if someone can't throw a ball high in the air, they wouldn't be in the nba anyway.

unless i'm missing something, if you do this in the last 2 minutes, that team gets a free throw and the ball back. if the ball is up in the air and they foul you i have to think this rule applies just like not being able to foul shaq when he doesn't have the ball in the last 2 minutes.

When my roommate and I were watching the game, we had the exact same thought. It could work. It should work.

A savvy opposing team, though, could foil this strategy by commiting a loose ball foul somewhere else. A simple shove would do. In fact, that's probably what would happen anyways. The guy defending Wesley (forgot who, sorry) would be looking to foul Wesley no matter what. So as soon as Wesley heaved the ball up in the air, the defender probably would have fouled him just out of inertia, or, at the very least, confusion. And at that point in the game, a foul's a foul, whether the ball is in Wesley's hands or 300 feet up in the air.

But yeah, there's little downside to trying "the chuck."

Rockets outlast Trail Blazers for 7th straight win

    By KRISTIE RIEKEN
    Associated Press

    SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE STANDINGS
    Team W L PCT GB
    San Antonio 40 12 .769 ---
    Dallas 33 16 .673 5.5
    Houston 31 21 .596 9
    Memphis 30 22 .577 10
    New Orleans 10 41 .196 29.5
    As of Feb 13 2005 10:52 p.m. CT

Yao Ming scored 23 points and Juwan Howard had 17, including four free throws in the last 13 seconds, to help the Houston Rockets hold off Portland 81-80 on Sunday night for their seventh straight victory.

Portland had a chance for the win at the buzzer, but Damon Stoudamire's half-court shot bounced off the rim.

Darius Miles pulled the Trail Blazers to 81-80 on a 26-footer with 3.1 seconds left, and Houston's David Wesley missed two free throws a second later.

The Rockets led 77-74 before Howard made two free throws with 12.5 seconds left, followed by two more with 9.3 seconds remaining.

Houston's seven-game winning streak is the NBA's best active winning streak and the team's longest since March of 1999.

The Rockets led by as many as 18 before the Trail Blazers came back to take a 72-70 lead with 2:22 remaining on Stoudamire's layup. Tracy McGrady, who finished with 18 points, answered with jump shot to tie the game.

Stoudamire scored 25 points, including five 3s, and Joel Przybilla added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers.

Notes: Zach Randolph, who had 26 points and 12 rebounds in Portland's last game, scored just seven points Sunday. ... The Rockets' 13 points in the third quarter tied a season low. ... Houston is 10 games over .500 for the first time this season.

No you can't, otherwise they can just foul the worse ft shooter on the floor. IIRC, if the opponent team foul a player without the ball, we will get 2 fts and possession of the ball.

T-mac must be hurted somewhere, his shot has been off for last 5-6 games. Luckly, we still won those games.

Thanks for clarifying. I always wondered why people threw the ball up at the end of the game, but I didn't know about getting the ball back w/ free throws.

    well..... dunno about injuries

but tmac's shot percentage last 4-5 games is around 37-38%

    pretty crappy nonetheless...

You know how to spot a 7-game winning streak?

When the biggest post-game controversey involves a purely theoretical discussion about something that might or might not have had an impact on the game. :D Damn. This feels good.

    true lol

but this game exposed a weakness of ours that has been hidden by all our close wins...

an inability to close out games and get WAY too comfortable with leads..

see games against LA, MINN, and this one for details.....

If Wesley threw it up, wouldn't that be a loose ball foul? automatic 2 freethrows when in penalty.

No... because techinically, Wesley isn't going after a rebound or a live ball (the definition of a loose ball foul).

Now, the refs may say that he "shot" it... but for that to happen, the defender would have had to foul well before Wesely started the heaving motion.

Thus, Wesley without the ball is just like every other player on the court... and if you foul any of them, its 1 shot and the ball back.

I was at the game, so didnt have the courtesy of all the replays. Was it just me or did the blazers goaltend us like 3 times without being called? They called the real obvious one for Yao, but it seemed like there were several where they blocked it real real late. Did anyone get a good look at these plays?
