Avery Johnson is decent, not sure if he'll take an assistant position. I would have liked Juwan Howard, he paid his dues, but Juwan took the college gig.
Imma double down on Kelvin Sampson. I don’t think Daryl would be so transparent with his treatment of D’Antoni without having a replacement in hand.
Wow the Lakers have a GREAT coaching staff. This feels like it's going to be a painful year. We fired our entire defensive staff. Have ZERO cap room and a HC who is incapable of coaching anymore.
So from the list that @justtxyank put together: JVG: Unlikely to leave his current position Thibs: Available Hollins: Signed with Lakers as assistant HC Silas: My ideal target; still with Mavs Longabardi: Last with the Cavs but was not present at Beilen's introductory presser so could be available Shrewsberry: Signed with Purdue as assistant HC Erman: Still with the Pelicans Hardy: Expected to take on more prominent role under Pop with departure of Udoka
Tom Thibodeau: Probably unavailable Appearing on The Zach Gelb Show, Tom Thibodeau confirmed that he’s not eager to rejoin the assistant coaching ranks anytime soon. The Lakers were rumored to have interest in Thibodeau as a lead assistant when they appeared to be nearing a deal with Tyronn Lue, but Thibs says the position probably wouldn’t have appealed to him. “I’ve known Ty for a long time. I coached him in Houston, and when he first got into coaching, we were in Boston together, so I consider him a really good friend,” Thibodeau said. “But I still have some time on my contract. I’ll be patient and just wait for the right opportunity to come along.”
Would think this would be one of those ‘right opportunities’, no? His knock, among other things, is offense. Gets a tutorial in offense from one of the best, while being the likely successor should the team stumble out the gate. If he succeeds and the rockets win/dantoni stays, he bails quickly for another opp as a head coach that’s been reformed on the offensive side magically.
like i've said all along, morey just waiting for the buyout market to pickup some coaches on the cheap. he wants guys who will outperform their contracts with HOU lol
Yes Rick Pitino is the perfect candidate to add to this dumpster fire. He'd definitely be an under the radar guy with no question marks. This franchise has not had enough bad PR lately, we need Pitino to get us in a new scandal. ... but if it got Harrel back when his contract is up, i'm cool with it.
Just bring in Mario Elie, Sam Cassell, Shane Battier and Ron Artest. Most will be cheap (exception being Cassell working for the Clippers right now), all were tough as nails as players, and, most importantly, they can give fans something to feel good about.
