His numbers are actaully way better when it comes to scoring. Ariza shot 39% from the field last season, Lee shot 43%. He gets to the free throw line more often and shoot 88% from there. The only thing we really lose is Ariza's experience, and height (marginal) and about half a steal a game. I like the move going forward I just hope Shane is through with the nagging injuries that plagued him last season.

Being that close to the threshold, you can take it to the bank that either Hayes or Hill will be dumped before the trade deadline in February. Unless, that is, Carmelo, Granger or another super stud comes available.

Probably about three Morey phone calls.

Dumping Hayes won't be enough. It would have to be both Hayes and Taylor to get below the threshold. Or Hill alone could do it.

Also, all these calculations assume that Harris, Johnson and Ish Smith are waived in the pre-season and does not factor in 10-day contracts and guys signed towards the end of the year (like Harris and Johnson were last season).

There will be no dumping of Hayes, we would have just not picked up his option if he was that expendable.

    Bima, question.

If need be, would Morey be able to buy out Jared's contract IF there was no deal in place to trade for a star player giving up our expirings/picks?

If so, would that get the team under the luxury tax?

Bima, i'm just having a little fun. You know you're my man 100 grand. Honestly though, i wouldnt pay lux tax for this team. Now i disagree with trading ariza and i do like lee, but having a non contender type payroll of 80m doesnt make sense. I think the rockets are still a 45-50 win team. I think they are anywhere from 5th to 9th and thats with everyone healthy.

    Question for Bima
Can that trade exception be used in the aquisition of Iggy? You know as in covering the cost? Sorry if this has been answered already.

Well, I like your thinking, but I believe you're giving New Orleans too much credit. Ariza has less of a championship "pedigree" than 2-time champ Posey.

Bizarre trade for New Orleans and it really hurts their future.

You can't combine the TE with a player or players in a deal. You can use the TE to obtain a player up to the amount of the TE.

While a buyout is a possibility, it is highly unlikely that Jared Jeffries essentially waives almost all of his remaining salary owed for the last two months of the season. If any buyout were to take place, Jeffries probably wouldn't waive more than a couple hundred thousand bucks off of his full salary. That won't be enough for the Rockets to avoid the tax altogether.

    Likewise, my man. Likewise.

On the projection for the team, I can't say that you're off-base with that. But with a 100% Yao (not very likely), this team could crack the top 3 or 4. I think Morey and Adelman are hoping for Yao to eventually round into that form by April, at which point the Rockets feel comfortable taking their chances in the Western Conference playoffs.

The trade exception itself could not be used in combination with other salary to match Iguodala's salary. However, if Philly needed to dump a second player making $4.9M or less, the Rockets could essentially make two separate trades, one involving a package of players and picks for Iguodala and one involving the Rockets taking on the ~$4.9M Philly player in exchange for the trade exception.

This all assumes that the Rockets are, in fact, getting a trade exception. I believe that they are. But ESPN.com's Trade Machine has yet to recognize the $2.5M trade exception that was supposed to have been generated from the David Andersen trade.

Would you have rather taken back Posey to get Collison?

You know, Brooks is going to get PAID before long. Collison has top 5 PG potential...

    Bima,
I think, as ESPN stated, the TPE may actually be for Trevor Ariza's full salary of $6.3 mil rather than the difference between his salary and Lee's.

The reason, I believe, is that the teams can structure the deal so that Houston essentially uses an earlier smaller TPE (i.e. the Andersen one or the Landry one) to absorb Lee's contract and trades Ariza for no salary in return. It would seem they can probably throw in some minor ficticous consideration (top 59 protected 2nd rounder, draft right to Frederick Weis, etc.) to fill any requirement that there by consideration going both ways.

Yeah, that's what I thought when I read the TrueHoop commentary.

If so, that's even better. I just wish ESPN.com's Trade Machine could keep the [bleep] up with that stuff.

Most fans could not care less about that stuff....they only care about the players and ESPN is catering to the masses.

Nah, that Trade Machine is for the uber-nerds like you, me and CH, my friend. The Traded Player Exceptions listed below the player salaries are a big part of what makes the Trade Machine so great. They just need to keep up with it a little better.

Bima, I tried to add up the salaries again but couldn't get to the figure you arrived based on the salaries shown in http://www.storytellerscontracts.info/resources/10-11salaries.htm

Is any of their reported salaries incorrect? -- Using their figures, I'm getting rox about $1.5M over the tax threshold instead of $2.13M.

It would be great if it had all the features, but that trade machine is for anyone that wants to screw around and mix and match players.

Just look at all the insane trades proposed on this very board for proof.

Now, regarding Taylor, if the team jettison's him for a low 2nd rounder, and loses Harris and Johnson, where would that put them?
