Man Blazers may get the 5th pick and snag Rubio if he falls to #5.... for Batum, Bayless, and and Outlaw...

Chad Ford: What would the draft be without a few Blazers trade rumors?

Portland GM Kevin Pritchard has been among the NBA's most active executives on draft night. In 2006, he pulled off three draft-day trades to get his hands on LaMarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy and Sergio Rodriguez. In 2007, Pritchard landed Rudy Fernandez and Petteri Koponen with draft-day deals. And in 2008, Pritchard traded up two spots in the draft to get Jerryd Bayless and then landed Nicolas Batum in a trade.

Will Pritchard strike again this year?

The Blazers have been making inquiries all over the first round. Their main target has been Pittsburgh's DeJuan Blair, a burly power forward who plays with a toughness the Blazers lack and coach Nate McMillan would appreciate.

However, Sunday night, there was talk Pritchard has even grander plans. With point guard Ricky Rubio possibly slipping out of the top four, the Blazers are talking to the Wizards about acquiring the No. 5 pick. Pritchard has been on the hunt for a point guard, and Rubio would be a nice fit to round out the Blazers' collection of young, unselfish talents.

But trading for the No. 5 pick is far from a done deal, as the price would be high for the Blazers. The Wizards want any team interested in the No. 5 pick to take Etan Thomas off their hands -- a move that could eat into the Blazers' cap space this summer. The deal almost certainly would cost the Blazers some young talent, like Bayless, Travis Outlaw or Batum.

Even more pressing, McMillan has been pushing for the Blazers to sit out this draft and instead add a veteran to their young core.

Pritchard joked to The Oregonian that McMillan "will probably kill me" if he adds another rookie to the team. McMillan laughed and told The Oregonian, "you will have to put me behind bars" if Pritchard gets another rookie.

There's no question Pritchard also is trying to figure out a way to get maximum cap room this summer to use for a free agent or in a trade. The Magic's Hedo Turkoglu gets the most mention, but sources say Portland's real target is Bulls point guard Kirk Hinrich.

If the Bulls re-sign Ben Gordon to a big contract this summer, they are going to have to part ways with Hinrich to be able to afford it. The Bulls are dangerously close to the luxury tax as it is, and gving Gordon a big deal would put them over the top. Enter the Blazers, who will have the cap space to absorb Hinrich's deal and put the Bulls back under the tax threshold.

Hinrich would give the Blazers a seasoned point guard, but one without the sizzle or upside of Rubio.

Can Pritchard sit back and let Rubio slip through his fingers?

Gonna have to disagree with you on this one.The issue here is not whether Amare could or could not put up great statistical numbers with Shaq. The whole "coexistence" philosophy goes beyond just puting up big numbers. I think it has more to do with Amare solely wanting to BE THE MAN. When in reality he's not good enough to BE THE MAN as a number 1 option and lead a team to a championship because I think he's better suited as option 2 or 3 depending on the overall depth of a team and my problem with Amare is I don't think he's willing to accept playing 2nd fiddle to anybody. So in the grand scheme of things coexistence is a concern. A major one at that.

If he was unhappy in Phoenix where he had an opportunity to play alongside Shaq who's one of the most unselfish players ...especially in this stage of his career then I have my doubts that he'd be happy here in Houston if he's not our number 1 option. Especially since he still has a personal vendetta against Yao (at least it seems that way to me since Yao was picked before Amare) combined with his injury history I can't help but seeing having Amare as being detrimental to our team and aspirations for a championship.

Christmas does look decent, esp for a 2nd round pick. The Rockets always want guys that can spread the floor for Yao, and he seems to fit into that category.

I just want every game at the TC to be a holiday party. Barry could be the Grinch.

I bet Darell has a deal in place to move Tracy but le$ wont let him do it because he will thinks he can land another steal by waiting till the deadline like they did with rafer this year.

    I hope im wrong though

I completely agree with you. My statement regarding "coexisting with Yao" was limited strictly to on-court production. What you speak of would definitely be cause for concern.

How long does the draft usually last? No more than 2 hours, right?

That's not how I read it. It sounds like the author is suggesting that it would likely cost them a player like Bayless, Outlaw OR Batum.

And that would be very bad news for the Western Conference.

interesting stuff from the chat with poopsworld bill ingram....

Who do you like better the Rockets or the Mavvz?

    Bill Ingram:
I love working with both organizations. First class PR staff and execs. in both cities. I was raised in Houston, so from a fan standpoint, the Rockets will always come first. After the Rockets I like a few teams, including the Mavs .

    Yao in China:
Hey Bill! How abt swap TMAC with Jamal CRawford plus filler?

    Bill Ingram:
Would much rather have Crawford . . .

    santino raheed in moro state:
who will the rockets trade for TMAC? is getting joe johnson possible? how can we get rid of brian cook?

    Bill Ingram:
Yeah, strongly suspect we're stuck with Cook. Equally strongly believe they'll move McGrady . . .Baron Davis and Vince Carter have come up frequently in
    rumors . . .

    maiky pacasum in malawalay 222:
what draft pick will the rockets get? whats the best move for the rockets? who should they get?

    Bill Ingram:
They're looking for a 2 and a backup 5. So think Thabeet or Mullens . . .DeRozan, Harden, Thornton, Henderson . . .they're not sure they're going to be able to get a first rounder, but they've been talking with everyone from the Grizzlies on down.

    Tim in Arizona:
What teams do you think would be interested in Jamal Crawford?

    Bill Ingram:
    Houston, Dallas, Toronto . . .top 3

    Jim in Fresno:
Which teams do you think we be the most active on draft day?

    Bill Ingram:
Portland will be busy . . .Houston, Memphis, NJ . . .should be a crazy day.

    Henry in Houston:
Hey Bill I think the rockets should go for guys like Daye, Clark and T-Williams on draft day. because they need to be more versatile and athletic.

    Bill Ingram:
I don't know about Daye or Clark, but Williams can play the two and would battle with guys like Kobe and Roy. The Rox are really thinking 2 or 5
...though Morey is always full of surprises.

    Mickey in East Texas:
Assuming the Rockets are able to buy into the first round and either player is available, who would be the better fit, Marcus Thornton or Terrence Williams.

    Bill Ingram:
Marcus is longer . . .Thornton is a phenomenal three-point shooter . . .I'd go with Williams for defensive reasons, but either is a good choice.
