Well, I was as disgusted as everybody else with the draft. I sure wish we were in the position of the Spurs just picking Splitter who is supposedly very talented for the season after next. I sure wish Les would spend some money to pick up another 1rst rounder or consider breaking the spending cap for at least a season or two. However, after a day or two to reflect, at least the two guys are very athletic according to the combine, they both had good college careers, they both seem mentally tough, and are hard workers, so there is reason to hope. I guess we will see if Morey is smarter than everybody else.
Correction, they didn't get hosed, they hosed themselves. Not that I'm professing to be an "expert" but I am baffled at how adding undersized players can be considered as matching what your competition is doing.
http://www.jconline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070630/SPORTS02010201/706300321/1152/NEWS So is Landry 6-7, 6-8, or 6-9?
"lifts" Actually, Landry's size wouldn't concern me so much if we didn't already have a "starting" PF who is very undersized. Brooks size really concerns me. Plus we have too many guards.
actually players that are both REALLY BIG AND FAST are quite rare in the NBA. Allen Iverson is an elite PG about the same size as Brooks. Shawn Marion is actually smaller than Landry. Tim Duncan would probably be guarded by Yao. Brooks is actually kind of long (6' 4" wingspan, and 7' 10" reach) and rebounds very well for a PG. anyway, both Brooks and Landry are probably years away from playing major minutes.
http://www.clutchfans.net/news/1421/for_rockets_landry_measured_up/ 6-8 1/2" in shoes, according to the Rockets.
Honestly, everyone just needs to stop making assumptions about the draft picks because the truth is (whether we've seen them play or not) none of us are gonna know how good they are until we see them play in an NBA game. I just RocketsRus would stop his constant whining. Too many people are acting like unknowns who get drafted have never made an impact in the NBA. Usually unless it's a top 10 pick, nobody is gonna get a starter in the draft. But a lot of players who have gone lower have become starters by mid-season. Based on what I've seen Landry and Brooks aren't Chuck 2.0 and Rafer 2.0, they are themselves and more importantly, they're already better than Chuck and Rafer. So stop whining, be patient, and actually wait for the season to start before you start jumping on these guys like they have no talent.
Listen...It doesnt take a scientist to know how easily Aaron Brooks will be posted up on the low block by the bigger guards...I dont need to see him in an NBA game to know that...Nobody is gonna get a starter??? Tiago Splitter will be starting for the Spurs once he gets here. Aaron Brooks will NEVER be starter in this league just for teh face that he wont be able to defend the bigger guards
Splitter will be starting and doing what...standing there and watching Duncan do everything, just like every other big guy the Spurs have other than Duncan. You definitely have a point about Brooks being posted up, I just wish everybody would hold off until they get a chance to play.
Brook's 6'4 wingspan is kinda long, if you put it relative to his height. 6'4 wingspan is still below average for guards and is nothing to brag home about. So we basically spent our 28th pick drafting a slightly faster JLIII? Again, this Brooks isn't bad, but the fact that he's drafted 28th when no other team wants him is atrocious. Is he so valuable that when you have a gaping hole at the PF you'd take him instead of a legit backup PF? You'll have a hard time convincing me that Brooks is the best player at the 28th. Earlier in the year, both Splitter and McRoberts at one time or another were projected as late lottery picks.
Jesus Christ.. Some of you just don't get it: http://bbs.clutchfans.com/showthread.php?t=131535&page=3&pp=20 See posts #45, 47 and 52.
Being drafted 28th or lower doesn't mean he's not worth it. Were Boozer, Arenas, Ben Wallace atrocious because of where they were or weren't drafted. And the top PF on their board was Landry anyway, and they made the trade to get him as well. They didn't want Splitter or McRoberts at 26 either. Please do some reading on this board.
I just don't buy any of this. Stockten was a starter. Isaiah was a starter. There;s not that much size difference. There are ways of defending against point guards posting up players. At Oregon they played a lot of zone. There are other defenders on the court who can guard the guy posting up. There are double teams available. I'm sure Adelman isn't that concerned about this. I'd rather have Deron Williams posting him up than driving into the lane for a layup. There;s no guarantee Splitter will be a starter. Landry might be a starter by then too.
I want to apologize to the entire board (and the mods) for going over the top with my posts during and after last weeks draft. Although I tried to address in a rational way why I felt so completely disgusted (and angry) about last week's draft, I did allow my emotions to run away with me in terms of the vitriol and the wording in more than one of my posts. Despite not using the bolding, enlarging and color choices of some, I did toss enough F-bombs (with asterisks of course) to make even Dick Cheney blush. So in this post, I offer to all those who commented that my level of passion was inappropriate given that our post-season is not over, I say to you, you're absolutely right. I will pull back, reign it in and try to be patient a little longer. My faith is wavering however, especially when we were only minutes awayfrom a probably trip to the WCF this year!!!! Although I get easily worked up about all of my favorite sports franchises, I've never joined a forum to discuss the Astros or Cowboys (yes, since before they ever went to a superbowl, that's how old I am), so pardon me for losing it in a place where I thought losing "it" wouldn't really matter. And for some reason, I tend to get more worked up (I guess because I have greater expectations for) the Rockets than I do the other two teams. I live and die with the ROX during the season and especially the playoffs. Losing to the Jazz they way we did and seeing them take the guy I wanted for us pushed me way over the proverbial edge last Thursday evening. Sorry again for that. I'll go back to my usual posts, which I know are overly long, but mostly sane and rational debates about Rockets decisions, and in an effort to not become "edc" I'll try (tough, tough job) to lay off Morey for a bit. Thanks to those of you who called me out. In those instances I deserved it. with humility, RRU
No apology is needed for me. I thought you expressed the overall feeling of the board, maybe a bit more colorfully than most. I thought your post on "hope" was particularily good. This organization is good at building expectations, but not particularily good at building genuine hope. When you cut through the hype, last year's team had two All Stars and after Battier the talent level plummeted. I love Chuck, I love Luther, I love Deke, etc. etc. But compared to the elite teams and even the lottery teams our starting lineup was not the best. Fifty-two wins is a testament to how good TMac and Yao are, but by the playoffs they looked "spent." The Rockets organization corrected an earlier mistake by bringing back James, but more talent is needed, real starting level NBA talent. Too many disappointments. More hope needed, I agree. Come on Rockets give the fans a boost! And RRU, rage on! Rabid fans are what ClutchFans is all about, isn't it!?
Solid - Thanks for that. Your moniker says it all, at least in terms of your support. I'll rage on, but perhaps in somewhat less profane manner, at least 'till next year's draft rolls around !! thanks again, RRU
