ClutchCity.net Game Thread: Hornets @ Rockets 12/29/2002

This was the weirdest NBA game I've seen in quite some time. First off, what the hell was that foul in the 2nd or 3rd quarter that got Cato one free throw?? I didn't have my radio so I couldn't hear any explanation, and it didn't really make much sense at all to me -- the shot was made, and the refs convened twice for almost a full minute. I'll watch it on the 51 replay tonight, but I was very perplexed by that.

Another weird point -- they didn't call a flagrant on Baron Davis' 6th foul . . . or did they and I just missed it? I thought there was no flagrant, but Steve got to shoot 2 FTs by himself, then we got the ball. Was there a flagrant that I missed, or is this some rule about the sixth foul automatically being a flagrant? I dunno, I just have never seen that before, and the foul didn't look flagrant from my seat.

Adding to the strangeness -- there were some TERRIBLE officiating calls on both sides. Yao Ming got into foul trouble when his man was beating the $#!+ out of him then fell over b/c Yao Ming moved. Then at the end of the game the 3 guard lineup with Moochie, Steve, Cuttino and Posey was interesting.

When I was sitting in the stadium during our fourth-quarter push, I was thinking "Well, this has been an . . . . okay game in a very weird way". I wasn't sure if I was the only one, but obviously lots of other people found this game odd. Well no matter, it's another W, and a CRITICAL one at that!!

 

I think the pass Yao made to Mooch at the end is kind of overrated. Yes, it was pretty, but the game was already in hand, and the Hornets had already pretty much conceded the win. If anything, it seemed like running up the score, but since this is the last time we'll see NO this season, no harm done...I guess...

Now if they would have pulled it off in a critical time in the game, like they've done before (can't remember which game though), then it would have meant more, at least to me.

I don't remember the Cato thing but their was a flagrant called on Baron. It was kinda weak but Baron shoved Stevie in the back after Francis totally beat him. It didn't appear bad because Magloire (not sure) caught Francis before he fell down. However, if Magloire wasn't there then Francis would have gone head first into the support pole.

The Cato play was just odd . . . I forget if he made the FT or not . . .

 

I have Dish, so I couldn't see the game, but does anyone know why YM only played 27 minutes?

the reason yao played so little is that he's in foul trouble early in the game ... he played little in the 2nd half....only the last 5-6 minutes in the 4th.

at one point, he has to changed his pants because of the blood stint

For one thing, he got 2 fouls in the 1st quarter. He also wasn't very effective as he has been. Actually, he hasn't been effective in like 2 weeks. Why? Who knows...

Wow, I guess i was wrong about Yao being the difference maker. Steve and Cat killed NO's guards! Great game by the Rockets, but could someone tell me about Steve's dunk?

 

Vengeance - Steve made the shot and they called a foul while the shot was in the air. Campbell fouled Cato trying to get position for the board. So they said it was while the shot was going, like a 3pt play. Cato missed the free throw though. I had never seen that before either, very strange.

Kinda like the Miami/NE kickoff that hit in the endzone and came out and they didn't call a touchback.

 

Why? Because Yao is tired. Can't say he wasn't effective - the 29 points game was not that long ago.

But never fear, Yao's father went to Yao's old Shanghai club to get some "expensive" Chinese herbal remedies that will help Yao in recharging and refreshing his tired body. (sina.com.hk) What are these? Don't ask, if you directly translate the name of these remedies it reads: Winter Insect Summer Grass...

I remember now. The foul was called a dead ball foul. The foul was called after the shot went in but before the ball was taken out.

 

The player of the game is JP. His rebounding and defense were just marvelous. CAT got his credit tonight in playing good D. Yes, D. Not scoring, that is just secondary. I hope CAT did not get too hyped up with his scoring otherwise he'll turn into a bigger ballhog than ever.

 

Finally finally finally , the crowd at COMPAQ center was loud! I have been to the last 6 games, and you feel like an idiot screaming, because no one else is! But today, it was different! And the Rockets made the run in the 4th because of the wave of "defense" coming from the crowd! And the funnest part, we screwed NO over by our loudness! Thanks to all the fans who made it out to today's game and were loud! Let's do the same thing on New Year's Eve!

 

... and the Rocks need a full house for the next game!

 

i had a silly thought. maybe yao's struggles lately are due to the fact that he hasn't seen his girl in like, what, 2 months or more? rox should locate her and fly her over for a couple of weeks to, uhhh, "recharge" yao's "batteries."

 

Well don't be sorry for this, as long as Franchise and Mobley picked up the workload when Yao's having trouble is just fine for me...
