Did your internet got knock out, days before the draft? Or you haven't been following the Rockets closely the last couple of weeks? I hate when people ask questions to such an easy question that they can find by just researching for 5 minutes. But to save the lazy people some time, it's Courtney Lee.
Like Clutch, I also would like to Morey a thumbs up for his draft day moves. It is refreshing indeed to have a GM with pulse who actually tries to find good players. I liked the Greene pick very much but I feel that Clutch, as are many others here, is really trying very hard to put the Dorsey pick in best possible light. Clutch describes Dorsey as "a tad bit short" at 6-7 for the 4-5 spot. No Clutch, he IS short for that position. I've read article after article about while he's only 6-7 he has this enormous wingspan that will allow him to play bigger than his size. Depending on whom you listen to, his arms make him the equivalent of a 6-10 or taller player. But I just can't agree with this line of thinking at all. There was a good reason why a guy with the attitude and physicality you crave for the 4-5 position lasted until the 2nd round while guys who possessed nowhere near his physical ability were drafted ahead of him and that reason was his lack of height and his extremely limited (like nonexistent) offensive game. No matter how much nastiness he brings, he will also be yet another undersized (height-wise) Rockets' front line player. That's why I described him as Chuck Hayes Part Deux (or Chuck Hayes 2.0). While Morey is to be congratulated for really working his butt off finding players, he's merely been playing the hand that's been dealt him so to speak. He's found some pretty good players in the late 1st and 2nd round but the players he's been getting are all available because they have limitations that have caused them to slide down into that range. Again, I'm not pointing the finger of blame at Morey because he's merely trying to clean up the mess that the previous regime left behind when premium picks in the NBA lotto were squandered for years and years. I just think that in trying to feel good about this draft, many folks are grossly overestimating just how much these draft picks will enable the Rockets to close the gap between themselves and their competition in the West. In the end, they (Rox) still have problems matching up with their competition and that will continue to be their downfall come playoff time.
or maybe the rest of us realize that the immediate help this team needed wasn't going to be addressed in draft regardless, and have instead opted to wait through the entire offseason (and - gasp - perhaps until the trade deadline) before we evaluate our roster against the competition.
Like R2K mentioned, I loved this quote! First, he swiped the guy the Spurs coveted in Batum. That alone is a nice bonus. Remember, this comes less than a year after Morey robbed his I-10 rivals of Luis Scola, so on San Antonio's warm and fuzzy list I'd say Daryl ranks somewhere between Joey Crawford and Santa Anna right now. Great writing, Clutch.
Joey Dorsey makes Chuck Hayes obsolete. He can do everything chuck can do only better. Chuck has to go.
Can we wait til preseason at least? You know, to make sure that Dorsey, as promising as he seems, isn't Lonnie Baxter?
Well as true as this statement is in most situations, Dorsey physically would be better at Chuck in every catergory. He is literally obsolete. Dorsey just needs to show that he can rebound at the rate Hayes does and then it would be official that Hayes is a goner. Bye Bye Luther, Chuck, Jackson...you all will be sent in a package for hopefully a good player
Hey, I hope so, too, but I'd wait til he makes that showing. Kelvin Cato's body was very nice, too... and I'd imagine measured out better than Chuck in every category... but he sucked. The guy Chuck beat out for minutes, Stromile Swift, has such a nice measurements that a team drafted him 2nd overall... but he sucked. We spent the whole last summer talking Rafer trades, too, because Steve and Mike made him obsolete... and they both sucked. I'm not saying don't hit it, just asking you to please keep the rooster in the pants for a few more minutes.
Carl you make a valid point. Joey Dorsey is a rook so the Rockets would be prudent to take a wait and see approach which they no doubt will. I will say this though. All they will be asking Joey Dorsey to do is play defense, hustle and rebound, things I think he has the potential to do much better than Chuck but we'll see.
I would guess the top 3 players on the Rockets draft board (reasonably expected chance of getting them) were: 1. Brandon Rush 2. Courtney Lee 3. Donte Greene DD
