I don’t think Simmons will be a Rocket either and I would only pursue him if it didn’t involve Rockets picks… I think Simmons is actually a strong glue player, assuming Green and whoever they draft this season pan out.
Just wondered this too, if you had doubts about who is going to be your Jordan but you have an opportunity to get a homeless version of Bulls Pippen. I am figuring out if Green is the Jordan or a weaker Bradley Beal. A version of Pippen without a Jordan that is not going to be good enough. + It would be great to find Simmons, any version of his through the draft rather than giving up major assets for him.
I don't think Green has the best comparison points at this point in time. Green is a pretty high volume 3 point shooter, and he has demonstrated the ability to make them. His attempts are a lot higher than some of his contemporary comparisons (Lavine, Beal) in their rookie seasons. This will always translate well as a scorer. He can get to the rim at will, and can draw foul at a pretty good rate. He's averaging nearly 4 attempts per game, higher than both Lavine and Beal in their rookie seasons. The stats do not go too far back, but Beal in his Sophomore season had around 58 touches per game, second on his team. Lavine, despite only playing 25 minutes per game in his rookie season, had around 57 touches. Green right now only has 45 touches per game, practically tied at 4th/5th on this team with Tate. So the only thing we know is Green isn't very involved and is pretty underutilized in the overall offense, far less involved than you would expect from a 2nd pick rookie (Green is 9th among all rookies in touches). We do know he can shoot a lot of 3s (not necessarily make them consistently yet, but he's on an upward trend), and he can blow by his defenders and finish near the rim or draw fouls at a decent rate. His playmaking and everything else is a question mark.
Thanks. My point was that in times of doubt, we should continue with picking high rather than making the Play In. We'll make the Play In, alright, but we should get to know our players first. Green has to be vocal and demand the ball, that is also the next step being a leader.
Bah! I missed it all with an Internet connection that was down for hours. Ah well, nice to have basketball nerds like Salman in there (from what I'm reading). I'll catch it next time hopefully.
Not doubting you but if true I don't know what that would mean for the other guards. I mean I've seen JG next to JC many, many times and he's AT LEAST an inch taller than Josh so does that make Josh only 6'2.5"-6'3" n shoes? And KPJ looks about 1" taller than JG. Does that mean KPJ's only 6'5"? I always thought Jalen was about 6'5" in shoes. But that was just from comparing him to other teammates and their listed heights. Thanks.
Rubio won’t play a minute here. He is a free agent this summer. No way he resigns with Rockets. He’ll go back to CLE. If I’m a PG like him, I’m definitely signing with a team who has serious lob threats in Allen and Mobley. but, yeah, I’ll make that trade, still.
Missed it too. I need more notice Wonder if next time @Clutch can capture it, then upload the audio as a podcast, as well. Hell, maybe I’ll just do that, then re-post for him with a “If you like this, make sure you Subscribe to my podcast” to build my own brand.
The issue is the marginal garbage minutes you're talking about - there's no evidence at all that they're of any consequence? Great that Anthony Edwards played tons of minutes. Kobe Bryant played...15 mpg as a 18 year old and 26 as a 19 year old. James Harden played 23 mpg as a 20 year old. Manu Ginobili played 20...as a 25 year old. Since those guys are all HOF players does that mean anything? Not really. It does suggest that it really doesn't make a difference. Since Green has had 2 hamstring strains in 6months - i really don't see the harm in letting Josh Christopher or Trevelin Queen or whatever close out the game while down 20 against 10 day guys. Seems to me that if there's some magic threshold it's better to optimize it amongst all the young players than anything else Actually the one thing I remember with regard to Sengun was the one night he did play 30 min - a ton of it being deep garbage in a big loss - he was absolutely useless the next night against the Knicks, got devoured by Mitchell Robinson, and what was a close game with Theis, of all people, in the lineup, turned into an easy Knicks victory.
There’s a lot to be said about Silas’s emphasis on effort, accountability and togetherness. Game to game, when the starters get blown-out, letting one continue to play is counterproductive to learning to get through things together. Make them solve it together. I’m beginning to view Silas like Ted Lasso … an under-appreciated development strategy is to nurture sports-life lessons centered around attitude and communication. Game to game, if the starters get benched together, they have to learn to solve it together, if they want to play more. when I say counterproductive, imagine Green developing at attitude through first 3Qs of games to not care, bc he’ll have fun in the 4th, when KPj and Wood get benched. it’s like, what’s more marginal to development, the marginal value of being strict wrt accountability and team attitude, or the marginal development from continued play during blow-outs, regardless. And I measure that by what’s more valuable: Playing in the 4th by yourself (with bench players) can indeed produce more confidence in yourself, but stopping the blowouts as a team provides both that *and* appreciation of learning to do things together — ie “I did it” vs “We did it!”
Completely agree. Greens rookie numbers compared to his projections are on par to better. Not really worried about his playmaking. If you give anyone significant on ball reps they’ll be able to read the defense and hit the correct open man. I’ve listened to multiple scours (box and 1) state that on ball reads are very teachable. He might not be able to manipulate the defense and hit the crazy ones like sengun but I think just making the correct read is enough.
Simmons can dominate a game without a jumpshot. Think about that for a second... how good (smart/skilled) do you have to be to be able to do that?! Pair him with Sengun and you have two of the smartest players in the league. Add another top pick to them two along with a 25ppg scorer in Green. Surround that trio with playoff experienced role player vets and that's a nice team to begin your ascent.
Simmons does not want to play PF. Where does he fit? We are guard heavy already. Our defensive woes mainly rest on 2 things: a twiggy center and an offense only head coach.
Agreed. A few things - I feel like their tank timeline was short lived also - could be wrong here - but man - feels like they turned it around quickly (since drafting Ja) and the former #2 pick came onto the scene year two and is making his case for star status in year 3. This is the type of stuff you love to see from a Number 2 pick - his confidence is at an all time high this year. We need some of that to wear off on our #2 pick (especially since they're boys). Ja averaged like 18 his rookie season at 20 years old. I think JG can match that (even 2 years younger) - if he starts shooting more
I norice you said nothing about his attitude, lack of development over his career, disappearance in 7 game series, propensity to play pickup ball style, and lack of relationship with coaches going back to his previous draft scouting reports, not to mention his price to acquire or his contract. I would call that cherrypicking. A top 20 NBA player would be someone who could turn a 12th seed to an 8th seed pretty much single handedly. I dont see it. Hype hype hype. People can list all of Westbrooks positive attributes too...
Josh Christopher has official measurements. He attended the NBA Draft Combine so we know exactly how tall he is, his weight, wingspan, etc so no need to guess with him. He was officially measured at 6'3.25 barefoot and 6'4.5 in shoes. Jalen is pretty clearly taller than Josh. Jalen and KPJ appear much closer in height than Jalen and Josh. Sorry, guys. I jumped in quickly to start the “backup” Space after Dave’s initial Space dropped out. I didn’t hit record (nor did I know how to), so that first ever ClutchFans Twitter Space will have to merely be the stuff of legend. Thanks again to everyone who participated or listened!
This is what bugged me as well. We're a rebuilding team/franchise and not winning much games. Literally every minute of the game is "garbage time" in my eyes. Keep the players we need to develop in the games.
