NBA used to be a big man's game. Rule changes have made it a wing man's game. The reason LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Pierce, etc... are so dominant is because the whole game is geared in their favor. The elite point guards: Williams, Paul, and Nash before them, are not going anywhere. The game has devolved almost entirely into who can create their own shot, and with the current rules, that's basically the wing guys. A while ago, post players had a similar advantage. The point of all this is that the Rockets need a McGrady who actually lives up to his hype. They need someone who can create his own shot, and who plays strongly from the wing. The way the league is set up now, they are going nowhere without someone like that. It makes for a brand of basketball that I think sucks. But thats what David Stern wants, so that's what the Rocket's should be looking for.
why is he taking the team out of the offense? By the way, it's not just him, but also Ron who take them out of their offense, and why is that? Because they're the only ones who can dribble with the ball when Yao gets fronted and try to make something out of nothing. You get another legit scorer in there and it takes away double teams, it gives them another option, hopefully a smarter option, meaning that's less time Ron and Aaron have the ball, less overdribbling, more action. That will open things up for everyone, allowing less dribbling and more ball movement and therefore Brooks can just drive or shoot instead of dribbling nowhere.
Here's the thing about the "available " point guards. They're old. Good , but old. The only thing they can guarantee us is that they won't be as good in 2 years, they can't guarantee us a ring within those 2 years. To get them we'd have to either get rid of Brooks/lowry or give up tmac or ron's contract. What does that mean? That regardless of what we give up, in 2 years we're gonna be right back here saying "damn we need a _____ to be a championship team." Brooks and Lowry can be built with as long as we cover our other holes, that's replacing or getting back tmac and getting bigger in the frontcourt with a solid PF/C with size. Then we'll still be championship quality and stay that way for a good amount of time, instead of taking out a 2 year loan.
If that deal was actually turned down by the Rockets, I'd consider firing Morey for just plain stupidity. He's done a wonderful job, but that's a HUGE mistake if it wasn't a directive from the owner to hold him.
I emphatically thought "Hell No" when I first saw that trade offer. But after witnessing what Billups has done with the Nuggets, I question my ability to evaluate players.
