The only endgame here will be for them to dissolve the Hornets at the end of the year
and make everyone on the team a unrestricted free agent

Paul can go where he wants
    and
15 more jobs leave the league
    and
the owners are not paying those salaries

    Everyone is happy.

..and also why Cuban refused to offer Barea more than 1 year offer and let Tyson Chandler go.

Stern is tanking. Even with Paul, they should be the worst team in the league. Paul will spend the season avoiding injury, everyone else sucks, and team morale must be at the bottom of the Kola Borehole. With a terrible record to make it look reasonable and Stern pulling the envelope from the barrel (I know they stopped doing that), they should get a very nice player in the coming draft to sell to some Kansas City owner. The new buyer will have a great young player on a cheap contract and otherwise a clean slate on payroll.

Honestly, I'd give Stern less crap if he admitted this instead of saying 'basketball reasons.' If he said he wanted a small payroll for the next buyer, I'd be fine with it.

Paul can't sue. He can file a grievance with the union and they can engage in arbitration with the league. But, Paul would have a hard time proving he suffered any damages since players under contract can get traded or not traded without their permission.

The only people who can say they suffered damage are the owners of the Rockets and Lakers. I'm sure they'll resolve all that internally and we'll hear nary a word of it. You will see no justice.

If Stern wanted to tank, he would have accepted the clippers deal. But he keeps asking for more pieces that would make the hornets better. And why wouldnt he have made that clear before demps made a deal to keep the hornets respectable?

He is simply screwing this up badly. He thought he could get more for paul but it isnt easy. Demps is a professional gm, stern is a bureaucrat.

And now he's a meddlesome owner with a massive conflict of interest.

I hope the clips stick with billups as their pg, then stern will have a serious problem on his hands

The Hornets will still have a little sign-and-trade leverage after the season. So, keeping Paul isn't completely worthless. I don't think his negotiations have been in good faith -- I think he's asking something that the counterparty would reject, or if they somehow accept is so ridiculously in NOH's favor that it'd be nothing but upside for a buyer. Short of that, a buyer would probably prefer a clean roster that he can shape however.

But, I don't think that's mutually exclusive of Stern having a conflict of interest and badly screwing this up. I think it's both.

In any case, it's clear his last priority is the city of New Orleans. He's destroying their long-term and their short-term basketball future. The good news is that the Hornets sucking will continue to haunt him all season with every loss.

The NBA has been absolutely embarrassing the last few months.. All thanks to Stern, too.

Glad the trade fell through. The Clippers are bidding against themselves. Stern is hardlining the Clippers just like he hardlined the players association.

There's really no need to dissolve the Hornets, after they trade CP3 for young players and more draft picks.

Stern will have the Hornets miracously win the #1 pick like the Cavs after losing LeBron. They will have their choice of Drummond or Davis. If the Cavs get a 2nd unprotected 1st round pick, they might even get both players.
