Its absurd if they got suspended for the mispronunciation, everyone makes mistakes.
If it ws for the Borat thing, maybe a little fine, or a warning, but not suspension, I think.

It's kind of blowing my mind how people aren't even understanding how it's offensive. And I don't think it has anything to do with how they pronounced Iran and Iranian and everything to do with everything that came out of their mouths afterwards. I mean, seriously? Borat?

edit: just watched it. I'm offended and I'm white. Ignorance just isn't an excuse. It was definitely condescending as all hell. They acted like they were watching a dog play the piano or something.

All that stuff about the "real Iran" and Borat were unnecessary. Now they are suspended for trying to be funny at Haddadi's expense.

I dont like their color commentator because he seems like a really big homer. I cant say that Im suprised.

Comments were definitely offensive. Well deserved suspension and Fox rightfully apologized. I think their comments would've outraged people and seemed more severe if they were about another ethnic group. I agree that the pronunciation argument is silly. They were suspended for calling the guy Borat's older brother.

Getting offended by the pronunciation is ridiculous. People from other languages mispronounce names all the time. Its not a sign of disrespect. Its because we speak a different language and the name is spelled differently than it sounds.

Sometimes the countries go by names that are completely different than by what they are called in their home language such as Japan and Germany. I don't get upset when a Spanish speaker calls my country Estados Unitos De America.

The Borat comment was because he looks like Sacha Baron Cohen. People are too easily offended now. Its a basketball game. Don't expect the announcers to be geniuses.

Iranian nationals need special clearance from the US goverment to work in America. It's not a stretch for the commentators to be surprised an Iranian is playing in the NBA.

...JVG regularly mocks players sight unseen for lacking talent especially Euros.

I saw the Youtube video and nothing in it was racialist at all.

This is pretty much it, They were being dumbasses for saying all those stuff after the mispronounciation (which isn't a big deal). The "Iranians can pass?!" and the "Whoa the REAL Iran?" comment were the ones that were rather stupid.

Im a Rockets fan and I know who haddadi is. Why cant a professional sports caster know?

JVG would have said something funny and not gotten himself in trouble. That is why he is one of the best in the biz. These guys were trying to be funny and failed. Not to mention there is a decent number of Iranians that live in the LA area. They should have known better.

Because it's not offensive. It's just thin-skinned minorities and the Political Correctness Police feigning outrage over the latest non-issue.

This is the first I've heard of it. Everyone I know pronounces it Eye-ran. I don't think they mean it as a derogatory term, it is just the way it is pronounced anglicized.

I think that's more of a function of most Americans not ever feeling or realizing the need to make an effort to try to pronounce foreign words correctly ... they'd just rather say it the way it reads in (American) English. The same thing they do with Iran and Iraq ... I see people do all the time with my own name -- it puzzled me for the longest time. When you see a word like "Iran", the thought process should be ... "this is not an English word, so the "I" probably doesn't sound like eye. I should try the most vanilla syllable form instead."

I have to agree with the Clippers decision to suspend the announcers. The same respect that is given for any player should be given to someone from Iran. There have been all kinds of athletes that have faced all kinds of harassment by refs, fans, fellow players and staff and the buck has to stop somewhere. The NBA needs to say, "we won't put up with harassment" or it will continue to happen frequently.

    Good job, Clips!

The suspension has nothing to do with disrespecting players as it is about disrespecting TV watchers. Players gets joked on all the time. And they get disrespected all the time. How many hamburger jokes do we hear about fat players? Or tall centers getting mocked when they dunked on? Or Oden being 40?

The Clippers guys made the stupid mistake of offending more than just the player, but aimed at a group of people instead.

What next? We ban "A Flock of Seagulls?" And forbid people noticing similarities in someone's appearance altogether?
