I don't really see how anyone could think this wasn't offensive. Maybe you weren't offended *personally* (I wasn't), but still...comparing Haddadi to Borat?

It's like if a French announcer was making fun of Scola and compared him to Homer Simpson.

Seems like you are more easily offended these days than you used to be...you seemed to be a good sport about the mazyar jokes for quite a while...

No I just had a rough morning. I try to be a good sport still. I just regret using my real name as my moniker. It is now tarnished forever, this great name.

    ;)

So we're allowed to be utterly offended by nothing, but sarcasm is not allowed?

This thread is a real head scratcher.

People just need to chill out… a suspension for a mispronunciation … wow!!! I do think the Media in general need to do a better job of pronouncing all things foreign … but I mean come on a suspension?

    Hmm…

By that same logic I think that George Bush should have been impeached … for his continuous mispronunciation of the country Iraq.

Lol … In fact the whole time the war was going on I couldn’t help but think that Saddam himself would have surrendered if just once he had heard the name of his country pronounced correctly.

But the whole dialogue was hilarious especially the part about Borat … lol

I guess the Clippers fan was tired of complaining about the team. Maybe he writes in that Ricky Davis is offensive and they trade him?

Seriously, their liberals, they have no spine. I pronounce it Uh-ran or Uh-ron.

In fact, the ****ing country was drown up by the British shortly before WWII , renamed Iran and given a British Shah. :p

    guys...guys..

i doubt its their pronounciation that got them suspended. its most likely what they said after that. the stuff about a "real iran" and borat that offended people...

Actually was wondering the same thing you were, "What does 'real Iran' mean" or anything mean? Just said it more obnoxiously ;)

Its actually more respectful here. In D&D the trolls will invade it and turn it into something else way worse.

I'm reading the comments section in that article for more clarification on what was offensive, and still can't get any good reason.

Without me knowing anything of the issue here, one person posted this which I agree with

I don't see anything wrong with the suspension. Those comments were just stupid. Regardless of whether or not it's PC, the problem is that such comments just isn't good for business. Making fun of Iran probably turned off quite a few Muslims and Middle Easterners living in the LA area.

And as others have pointed out, Stop talking about the eye-ranian pronunciation. That has little to do with it. Read the entire transcript before commenting please.

The broadcasters were clearly mocking Haddadi because he is Iranian.
They were acting shocked because he could pass the ball

Mockery is a form of racism fellas.

I am not sure if it is offensive. But I am irritated by people who pronounce Iran as EYE-RAN, and Iraq as EYE-RACK. It's like pronouncing America as Ame-RYE-Ka.

Anyways, this thread should be banished to the D&D.

I'm pretty sensitive when it comes to the RAE issues, and I have to say that you're seriously over-reacting. For example, my name (phonetically spelled in English) has been butchered by almost everyone I meet--even the Americanized version. It's not b/c people are disrespectful, it's b/c they simply can't pronounce it---it's practically impossible for them. I don't foster anger or hate towards them, because these "racist" acts were done unintentionally.

Now if you were riled up about the Borat comments, I would agree with that much more. But going off about the pronunciation, "EYE-ran?" I'm afraid you're barking up the wrong tree.

Haddadi looks like Borat...so the comparison is valid and unracist :)

i can imagine what the announcers will say if a east indian dude finally joins the nba (which will never happen, i should know :p)

announcer: Venkataratnam Narasimha Ratetutaiah enters the game
color commentator: Funny, they actually fit his name on a jersey?
an: ya i guess they had it specially made?
cc: check the tag prolly said made in India?

    zing!!!

    regarding a color commentator ---
u know like calvin murphy is the cc as bill whorell would say, and c.m. would say watch it bill

im indian so ya i can make fun of it.

If they were suspended for the comments that they made after the apparent mispronunciation, then that's fine. They were ignorant statements made about a person and a culture that they don't know anything about, and I can see how they could be interpreted as racist at worst and stupid and un-PC at best.

However, the pronunciation argument is stupid. If you are from another country and you pronounce America differently, I don't care. I'm not offended. You're not from here, you may not speak the same language I speak, your accent may be different than mine - but if I can understand what you are saying, I don't care. If you are upset because Iran was mispronounced, you are overreacting.

If I go to Tegucigalpa and I mispronounce it while I'm there, I don't hate Honduras. I'm just unfamiliar with how to pronounce the word. I am not intentionally disrespecting you.

    Seriously, wow.
