Not really. At least me and pgabs are saying the reactions to this are overblown when we as a country have no problem sending millions of other animals to their deaths so we can enjoy a nice steak or fried chicken. I don't think anyone's said that dog fighting is A-OK.
exactly, i think its pretty barbaric as a matter of fact. but i just feel I'm not in a position to criticize it given I can't really call myself an animal rights person. and I feel the same about most people. its just a hot button issue, people love dogs,so society says cruel treatment of dogs is wrong. but to me there really is no difference from the treatment of animals in the food industry.
No. But you don't morn as much as a woman across the world dying as much as your own wife. It doesn't mean the life is ultimately any less or more important. It just is to you and your own personal view of your world.
What reactions? The media? Don't you think that goes without saying? Not exactly shocking. As far as anything else; well, it's a felony and a professional athlete saying a felony is 'ok' kinda does = stupid. As far as overactions, yeah I can agree with that. To me, though, the differences are enough that just because you think dogfighting is bad you should be a vegetarian is way too much of a stretch. I don't see how such a correlation suddenly means you can't be critical of dogfighting. And if we all agree that it is bad, then there isn't much to debate.
Then the question is whether you're as mindful with the steak you eat as much as all the death happening across the world.
about 18 years ago I attended a dog fight with a co-worker/friend. I was the only white guy there. He had to vouch for me or I would have gotten my ass kicked. It was not entertaining and was quite depressing. My friend Joe took good care of his dogs (when he wasn't fighting them) but they still got hurt in the process and the amature care he gave them himself actually lead to him becoming a Vet. We've lost touch but I wonder if he still condones dog fighting now that he takes care of animals all day.
Apples & Oranges. Fighting dogs shouldn't really be compared to Slaughtering Pigs and Cows. Slaughtering animals for mass consumption is ultimately a need for human survival. What do they do with a animal after it gets slaughtered? It gets eatened. Every single part of their body gets eatened one way or another. What do they do with an animal in a dog fight after it died? I assume they throw it away. It's mainly for the thrill and the rush. It's not a neccessity. It's for only pleasure. This should be more compared to eating shark fin soup where they throw the entire body away into the ocean. Or compared to killing animals for their skin and throwing away the rest of the body. You don't need a fur coat. You don't need an alligator skin belt. BUT YOU NEED MEAT. We are not Herbivores by nature, we are Omnivores. The overraction to all of this by the media is just typical and I'm tired of it. Portis isn't ignorant, he's just telling the truth as to what does go on. It's the media that's ignorant and overreacted over something relatively minor. The media and Americans in general are attached to dogs, cats, and dolphins...cute pretty things. If dolphins get killed just for the fins like the 'mean' sharks, America would react the same way. Same goes on for the missing cute white kids that used to be on Fox & CNN all the time. Have you seen one ugly kid that's colored on TV who's missing? The media cracks me up.
it's cultural. laws reflect the culture. the media isn't making this stuff up...it actually is illegal. there are criminal reprecussions. the media doesn't write legislation. the media doensn't enforce the law. they're covering the story. they cover the story locally when animal abuse turns up on this sort of scale. but when a national celebrity is involved, it gets more attention.
Spoken like a true dog-eater not to be insensitive, but don't child molesters normally go for good looking kids in the first place (both white and non-white)?
Yeah I didn't take that into account that it is illegal I still think the media blew it way out of proportion. I guess I disagree with someone doing something like that is equivalent to other felony charges like assult with an attempt to kill another human being type of charge.
anytime a prominent quarterback in the NFL is facing felony charges that could land him in jail for 5 years, it will ALWAYS be a big story.
so your problem isn't with the media...it's with the law. from what i hear of what goes on at a dogfight, i have no problem with it being a felony. it's beyond barbaric.
I'm not sure a whole lot of people realize exactly what goes into training & fighting a dog. It will turn your stomach. In no way is it remotely comparable to the *typical* livestock industry. No way.
