I have no doubt this will be a major story due to the politically correct police and the abundant "Clinton is power hungry!" lunatics, but I will say I gained a lot of respect for Obama's campaign today. The reference was clearly directed to the timeline of campaigns and not to the assassination itself.

    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/05/clintons-contex.html

But I am pleased that for the most part, the Obama campaign is staying above the idiocy and paranoia that seemingly runs rampant among a lot of the accusers. I had previously said I doubted Obama's call for a "change" in style of politics because he had yet to be put in a position where he would have ample reason and opportunity to employ a "kitchen sink" strategy. Well, I was wrong. Today, Obama's team had the opportunity, and for the most part, they haven't taken the bait. Very happy and surprised to see that.

I don't think it's idiocy to be offended by the statements. I agree that she wasn't meaning she hoped Obama was going to be killed and she would stick around just in case...

But her apology didn't even mention that. Her poorly chosen words were offensive to everyone. Obama started getting death threats the day he declared his candicy, and now she starts talking about an assassination of the past as a reason why she would still be in the nomination.

Yet she didn't apologize to Obama at all. It is insulting.

As they just said on countdown, she's been forgiven for a lot. She was forgiven Ferraro's racial slur, she was forgiven for Bill comparing Obama's campaign to Jesse Jackon's. She was forgiven for bringing up Ayers in the ABC debate, and everything else. She was forgiven for the Karl Rovian tactic of the 3 AM call commercial. She was forgiven for trumping McCain's experience as a qualification of over Obama(or even herself). She's been given the benefit of the doubt time and time again.

This time whether she intended it or not, it is far from idiocy to be upset about her comments. Again her opponent is the one who's been receiving death threats since day 1 of the campaign, and then to not even mention him in her apology is just disgusting.

It has nothing to do with political correctness, and everything to do with how offensive her comments were whether it was intended that way or not.

I'm happy you see that now, but there were already numerous examples of Obama taking the high road. I'll name some just off the top of my head:

In a debate (before he was the frontrunner) they ran footage of Hillary mocking him with the "angelic choirs" bit. He smiled and said "she should get points for delivery." The audience laughs, tension is dispersed. He passed up a wide open invitation to attack/criticize.

In a later debate he was invited to comment on Snipergate. He refused, saying they should focus on important issues. He didn't use that argument only to defend himself. Hillary did not reciprocate in that debate, hammering "bitter", Rev Wright, and Ayers.

The Obama campaign did impugn Clinton on the "character gap" during sniper gate, but didn't go far with it. Their actions are nothing in comparison to the Clinton campaign taking any possible gaffe and expounding upon it again and again.

Today Obama could slaughter Clinton on this, and hasn't. The contrast between the two couldn't be greater.

I'll give just one comparison (there are more): Remember how Hillary tried to clobber Obama by completely abusing his comments about Reagan? There's your contrast between the two.

I don't think she is talking about a possible assasination of Obama and that she should stick around just in case (Franchiseblade's good wording). Merely anything can happen. I think her apology was appropriate. I do think the whole thing is a bit overblown. Sometimes these off the cuff remarks are taken as if they are all carefully thought out. Sometimes they are not.

Obama played it right, both from a non-divisive point of view, but also nobody including Obama should be talking about Obama being assassinated. It is too dangerous. There should be as little public focus on this as possible.

The problem I have with those examples is that there was no sense of urgency at the time. Polls the year before the primary have been proven over and over again to be meaningless. As a result, it's easy to take the high road when the stakes aren't all that high.

Today, Obama is the frontrunner, but there's definitely a lot at stake. I have very little doubt that Clinton wants the VP slot, and I feel very confident Obama doesn't want to give it to her. However, I also know a lot of folks in his inner camp are very concerned about how he'll reject her (if he does), and want it to be in such a manner that it doesn't permanently offend Clinton's supporters. Today could've been an opportunity to send a low blow that might've been a complete knockout, and they didn't go for that. They practiced what they preach, and I respect that.

Even though I've given up on the Clinton campaign and recognize Obama's inevitability do you guy's seriously think Clinton is planning on assasinating Obama or this comment is meant to undermine the party?

I'm c'mon this is like one of those comments when your team is one game out of the playoffs and you say "hey what if the team ahead of us's bus crashed.."

I will totally agree its a stupid comment but to read this as some sort of conspiracy not that is Hillary derrangement syndrome.

Was she forgiven? Not if you listen to Obama supporters she wasn't.

Actually, polls indicate Obama voters are more forgiving to her than anyone besides her supporters. It's the general populace that gives her very low ratings on truthfulness, etc. People on this forum aren't representative of the general public.

Very few people believe in any conspiracy here. That kind of talk is a distraction from what happened. Any Hillary "derangement syndrome" is hers.

Sorry - I didn't mean to imply that she wanted to assassinate him. Just that she's throwing out all sorts of nonsense hoping something will stick - her interest. The fact that he might be assassinated is not a reason to stay in the race - if she were to drop out, and he got assassinated, she'd still be the nominee. It's just nonsense that she keeps throwing out there. She's simply interested in power - and will say anything to try to justify that quest, in the hopes that someone will listen to her.

I don't think it's a plot to have him assassinated at all. I don't even think she meant to say she was going to stick around in case he was killed, but it's reckless for her to bring up RFK's assassination in a campaign where Obama has been receiving death threats and in relation to a question about her still being in the race.

It isn't the first time she's broached the subject, but this was her clumsiest attempt. It was offensive, and she wasn't thinking when she said it at all. But whatever little thought was invested in her words, her own ambition was at the top of it, and her semi-apology only added to the shame.

I don't think anyone was implying she was plotting something, at least I hope not.

This opinion article sums up my feelings pretty well:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions...llary_clintons_colossal_blunder_simply-2.html

Hillary Clinton's colossal blunder simply the last straw

SICK. Disgusting. And yet revealing. Hillary Clinton is staying in the race in the event some nut kills Barack Obama.

It could happen, but what definitely has happened is that Clinton has killed her own chances of being vice president. She doesn't deserve to be elected dog catcher anywhere now.

Her shocking comment to a South Dakota newspaper might qualify as the dumbest thing ever said in American politics.

Her lame explanation that she brought up the 1968 assassination of Robert Kennedy because his brother Ted's illness was on her mind doesn't cut it. Not even close.

We have seen an X-ray of a very dark soul. One consumed by raw ambition to where the possible assassination of an opponent is something to ponder in a strategic way. Otherwise, why is murder on her mind?

It's like Tanya Harding's kneecapping has come to politics. Only the senator from New York has more lethal fantasies than that nutty skater.

We could have seen it coming, if only we had realized Clinton's thinking could be so cold. She has grown increasingly wild in her imagery lately, invoking everything from slavery to the political killings in Zimbabwe in making her argument for the Florida and Michigan delegations. She claimed to be the victim of sexism, despite winning the votes of white men.

But none of it was moving the nomination needle, with Obama, despite recent dents, still on course to be the victor.

So she kept digging deeper, looking for the magic button. Instead, she pushed the eject button, lifting herself right out of consideration.

Giving voice to such a vile thought is all the more horrible because fears Obama would be killed have been an undercurrent to his astonishing rise. Republican Mike Huckabee made a stupid joke about it recently. Many black Americans have talked of it, reflecting their assumption that racists would never tolerate a black President and that Obama would be taken from them.

Clinton has now fed that fear. She needs a very long vacation. And we need one from her.

Say good night, Hillary. And go away.

I'm glad I read that article, if only that I know not to take Michael Goodwin seriously on much of anything anymore. That was a complete embarrassment to journalists everywhere.

In all seriousness, however, that article really illustrates how difficult this is for me. I've never seen paranoia run deeper than it does among many of Obama's supporters, toward Clinton. I've never seen people more rude and completely illogical and disinterested toward the votes of millions of people they need to win this election. However, his actual campaign has never been like that, and I continually remind myself that it's not fair to lump the supporters with the candidate himself. But it's hard.

I know I'm one person, so my vote doesn't mean anything -- but I will say this. If at any point in the next few months, the Obama campaign even hints at these remarks as damaging or eliminating Clinton from VP consideration, I'll vote for McCain. And I say that as someone who believes deeply in the Democratic party and hasn't ever voted for a Republican. I've talked to several Clinton supporters who feel the same. The Obama camp needs to be very careful with this.

I am. She's only bringing up the fact that there have been other primaries that ran late into June. I don't think she was saying that Obama might be assasinated as a reason she should remain in the race. It's just hypersensitivity.
