LOL - I interviewed a woman once for a senior management position that was very talented, but she was 3 months pregnant, and would have needed time off during the making of our project, that we as a small company could not afford. She did not get the job (not soley due to this, but to say it was not a factor would be disingenous), and she ended up staying home as a stay home mom, which again, would have devestated our company. So, I am not sure of the legalities of it, but the reality is sometimes harsh. Straight talk is sometimes not really what people want to hear, but it is the truth. I do find it strange though that the Democrats have always championed the women's rights issue, and the republicans have been more the stay at home and raise the kids type of party....an interesting occurance that the republicans have begun to come out of the cave on this issue. Their mock indignation on people questioning Sarah as a mother rings hollow. DD
My business partner once left a voicemail for a job candidate where he stated "we've decided to go with the younger woman" Age was genuinely NOT a consideration in choosing between the two candidates. But that's how he worded it. It was a tense few months waiting for her lawyer's call. (which -- thankfully never came). (you might make the same point about a newborn of a male candidate....but most wouldn't. That's the extent of it, really. There are so many other reasons to question her qualifications for the job -- this stuff is just so much crap). The mock indignation stuff runs both ways though, doesn't it.
I find it strange that Democrats and feminists on TV are the ones saying she should be staying at home taking care of her children.
I don't think she should necessarily stay at home (Though I think kids are better off if one parent can stay home), but both parents of a new born have a lot of work to do, and breast feeding is primarily done by the woman unless she pumps. And I question Palin's judgement for flying 9 hours after her water broke, to me that is just plain irresponsible. DD
I am one of the most ardent supporters of Women's nipples. I believe that all women's nipples should be supported. DD
Or she decides not to breastfeed. My wife gave up after 2 weeks. I wasn't happy about it but I had no say in the matter.
Who exactly has said this? The only person I know of is Dr. Laura, who's basically the exact opposite of a Democrat. Here's Dr. Laura: I am extremely disappointed in the choice of Sarah Palin as the Vice Presidential candidate of the Republican Party.... I’m frankly and sadly caught in the dilemma of having to balance policy versus example in touting a candidate for the office of the First Family... Role models are very important. Children and young adults look to those who are visible and successful as a road map of what is acceptable behavior and emulate those actions over the morals and values their parents and churches have taught and tried to reinforce. It’s a tough go these days, when the “bad that men or women do” is used for entertainment purposes without judgment, or is excused because of political or financial considerations. I’m stunned - couldn’t the Republican Party find one competent female with adult children to run for Vice President with McCain? I realize his advisors probably didn’t want a “mature” woman, as the Democrats keep harping on his age. But really, what kind of role model is a woman whose fifth child was recently born with a serious issue, Down Syndrome, and then goes back to the job of Governor within days of the birth? I am haunted by the family pictures of the Palins during political photo-ops, showing the eldest daughter, now pregnant with her own child, cuddling the family’s newborn. When Mom and Dad both work full-time (no matter how many folks get involved with the children), it becomes a somewhat chaotic situation. Certainly, if a child becomes ill and is rushed to the hospital, and you’re on the hotline with both Israel and Iran as nuclear tempers are flaring, where’s your attention going to be? Where should your attention be? Well, once you put your hand on the Bible and make that oath, your attention has to be with the government of the United States of America. Find one credible Democrat who has said anything remotely similar.
CNN Soledad Obrien said it yesterday and had two women on. All three said they have kids(Soledad has 4), and said being VP would be hard to do with 5 kids especially one with Down's syndrome.
I just found another one... Sally Quinn from the Washington Post who is a Feminist but questions Palin. http://newsweek.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/sally_quinn/2008/08/sarah_polin.html "Is she prepared for the all-consuming nature of the job? She is the mother of five children, one of them a four-month-old with Down Syndrome. Her first priority has to be her children. When the phone rings at three in the morning and one of her children is really sick what choice will she make? I'm the mother of only one child, a special needs child who is grown now. I know how much of my time and energy I devoted to his care. He always had to be my first priority. Of course women can be good mothers and have careers at the same time. I've done both. Yes, other women in public office have children. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has five children, but she didn't get heavily involved in politics until they were older. A mother's role is different from a father's." Very hypocritical of her to write that when she is part of the Feminist movement.
Please point to a quote where she actually contradicts herself. Saying that she's part of "the Feminist movement" is meaningless. I could just as easily say you are a hypocrite for what you wrote when you are a part of the Clutchfans movement. Neither statement makes any sense without sufficient context.
