Dempsey has never played as a CM for the US or Fulham, he plays either wide right or up front. I'd imagine with Davies injury we'll see him a lot more up top with possibly Holden playing wide right.

Yeah, none of the articles really say exactly what the results were.

This one (http://www.ussoccer.com/News/Mens-National-Team/2010/01/Dempsey-Injury-Update.aspx) just says there was "moderate damage to a ligament in his right knee."

Regarding Dempsey, I too hope he gets to spend more time up front for the US Team and Fulham. That is where is performs best imo, and that is where he most recently was at Fulham. He has more opportunities there than wide right, and that suits his game better. I am very excited for the WC as well, and excited/thankful that Dempsey will be able to play, but it still sucks that he had to get hurt just as he was playing so well.

Since there was some discussion of the Davies situation in this thread I figured I'd put this here. This is great news, both for the team and for Davies.

Read the article just a few minutes ago. I'm glad to see where Davies is at this point. That is absolutely fantastic. It's still miles and miles away from where he needs to be. I'm taking it with at "wait and see" approach. If he's the player he was pre-accident, I'll be ecstatic. That Charlie Davies gives the US a true finisher and one that could compete for the golden boot.

Paraguay footballer Salvador Cabanas shot in head

Paraguayan international footballer Salvador Cabanas has been shot in the head in a bar in Mexico City.

Cabanas, 29, who plays for the Mexican club America, is said to be in a critical condition in a local hospital.

Mexican officials said two suspects had been arrested but the motive for the attack was unclear.

Cabanas was expected to play for Paraguay at this year's World Cup in South Africa. He was also linked to English Premier League side Sunderland.

His international team-mate Paulo da Silva already plays for Sunderland, who are managed by Steve Bruce.

Crazy stuff out of Mexico, what the hell is up with that place, all you hear about is people dying in that country.......someone must have lost some big money.

Totally separate incidents... one a driving "incident", the other a thuggish retaliation.
WHOA, whoa, whoa. This could have happened anywhere, dude. Sure, there's corruption, but... come now... the entire country is out of control because of just one shooting incident? It just happens to be a well-known football player, man... I don't think Mexico is out o...

What am I saying... even I'm afraid to take the SwoLy Family down there for vacation... :( sad.

I never thought I'd need to tell you this, but I would be a bad parent if I didn't. Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep them busy while their husbands did the cooking.

It really is sad. The damn drug cartels are turning that country into one hell of a scary place.

Although, we're still considering Cancun or Cozumel for Springbreak...might just hit Miami though instead.

If you've not been, Miami is a fun palce, but not exactly the best "Spring Break" destination. I would recommend Ft. Laud and Key West over Miami for Spring Break. But you could probably do all three places if you decide against Mexico.

And I desperately want Dempsey to play since I've gotten mistaken for him twice somehow by British tourists.

Been meaning to comment on this, it's just nitpicky but had to say Dempsey has played at CM for the US albeit a few matches when he first broke into the team. Not too sure bout the Cottagers cos I haven't watched all their matches since he joined but I could have sworn he's been subbed in at CM once or twice early in his time there but Hodgson realized he was more effective going forward than sitting at CMid.

    Carry on :)

There has been some other good news on the Americans Abroad front...

Maurice Edu returned for Rangers today and played the full 90 minutes in their Scottish Cup win against St. Mirren.

Freddie Adu scored in his second consecutive game for Aris Thessaloniki.

Personally, I've always been a fan of Edu and think he can be a valuable piece in South Africa. He can play that defensive mid role that Ricardo Clark is sitting in, but with at bit more creativity, IMO.

Davies has completed rehab and can now start training with his club. Hopefully he can start getting minutes in games in the next couple of weeks.
