Yep Morey said Clint Capela has been called up. He also alluded to what sounded to me like his opinion that Dorsey hasn't been hitting the mark with the recent opportunity to play more minutes. He also said "[Clint] has been tearing it up in the D-League, which is nice to see." Said "we need someone to hopefully step it up there...." as if he is hoping Clint gets some minutes and makes a meaningful impact. I hope this means Morey sees what other have said, which is that no way can Clint be worse than Dorsey. Clint plays way above the rim. We need that. The general, default consensus seemed to be that Capela was raw and needed 1-2 years of d-league to be ready. But the watermark for ready has always been "go down to the d-league, tear it up , dominate the d-league competition, and you'll force it on the team as proof that you're ready" So, proofs in the pudding. Play him.
Morey is getting desperate. If either Howard or Jones were available, I doubt Morey would be calling up Capela now. Perhaps later in the season.
I agree. He can't be too much worse than Dorsey, but it'd be unfair to expect him to come in a contribute right away. Dmo tore it up as well in the dleague and it taken him a long time to be able to contribute meaningfully. Bigs take a lot longer to develop due to them continuing to fill on their size and physical dimensions. Hopefully he can be at least better than Dorsey but he's still a year or two away from really being able to make a major and consistent impact. I hope I'm wrong though.
I don't think calling Capela up can hurt. While he still has massive holes in his game, based on what I've seen in the D-league he may simply run into a few excellent plays on sheer ability. This is much more about how bad Dorsey has been then how ready Capela is. Dorsey simply brings nothing to the table.
Damn I really wanted to give him plenty of time in the Dleague to develope. I would have loved him to have made it to the 30 min plateau and seen good consistency. Maybe with an opp fg% at the rim around 40%. Capela potential > Dorsey Production.
You sir are probably correct. It won't hurt Capella, and when D-Mo has been resting the paint defense has been much less than optimal.
The problems with bigs begin with their rotations on defense. Paint protection is by far and away the most difficult defensive job in the NBA. After you there is nobody.
Seriously, we call him up now?? If you wanted to have him for the Memphis game, why didn't they do it on sunday or yesterday so he can get some training with the guys? No way McHale uses him now..
quite honestly I thought Dorsey had been quietly rounding into form. His minutes had improved in quality significantly of late. Still, if Capela can already be better (which I doubt he'll understand team defense) defensively than Dorsey, let her rip.
I agree that Dorsey started doing some good things. But I think there is a good chance this also has to do with Dorsey either (A) struggling through a nagging injury and/or (B) not being in NBA game shape. Remember last game when out of the blue for no reason Dorsey asked quickly for a sub out? Either he was winded or that plantar fascitiis foot is acting up again. But Capela understanding team defensive schemes better or worse than Dorsey doesn't really matter if Dorsey can't stay on the court and his calling for quick sub-outs.
Good news! People keep saying this guy is 2 years away or more from being able to contribute are crazy. He is definitely several years away from us seeing what his true potential is, but that is the case with all young players. They said the same thing about Giannis last year. He needs playing time and experience. He has NBA size and length right now. He can rebound, block shots, finish pick and rolls, and get offensive put backs RIGHT now. All he needs to do is rebound, play defense and dunk the ball. We won't be calling plays for him. It isn't like Dorsey or Black are going to be used as post up options and neither of them can finish like Capela. He can do everything Dorsey is doing at the very least. He may look bad at first for a few games, but given consistent minutes he will start looking better. D. Mo started out looking like he would be out of the NBA after his rookie contract expired and now he looks solid. Black hasn't really impressed, but he is all we have at the center position and has made some small progress. Dorsey started looking like a scrub and has continued to look overmatched for the most part except for a few moments here and there. There is absolutely nothing to be lost here by giving Capela Dorsey's minutes. My only concern with him is he may not yet be strong enough to bang with the big boys.
We can all hope. But unfortunately he will probably not have a clue about NBA defense. Hopefully the coaching staff will have a few days to work with him. And he is going to be laid out like in a butcher shop for Marc and company to go to work on him. That is a very bad match up for any rookie big.
There is no way he is ready to defend Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. I'm not crazy. Talk about trial by fire and being thrown to the wolves. They will eat him alive if he plays tomorrow. Those guys would score on Dwight when they have it rolling. I'm just saying that Capela has some raw ability that this team could use right now. Dorsey and Black aren't anything special. Capela could potentially be an elite level rebounder, shot blocker and finisher around the rim. You can't say that about the other two guys. They are just wide bodies.
