If the true bigs actually took pride in the fundamentals of offensive post play, there would be teams that would make them adjust. There are so few skilled bigs who want to score inside that it's non issue vs GS. Today's bigs are pick and pop or pnr alley pop guys so they allow teams to play smaller. Teams can play several mid sized guys together and switch plus with a tough SOB like DG, still compete on the boards. If you had a big who could actually threaten him on the block, it would be a game changer. But that style of play is a lost art.
I don't think it would be a game changer I think the modern way Refs work would require a super human amount of skills on the block Hate Dhoward as much as you like. . . he turns. . curry/green flies across the lane. . . Offensive foul They jump on his back and climb it to knock the ball out of his hands. . . no call Hack his hands and wrists . . no call but a turnover The NBA does not respect and does not seem to want anything like a low post game Rocket River
I like your post, and partially agree with it, but he needs to improve on offense too. His low post skills are rudimentary and he lacks a jumper. I hope he becomes a more consistent role player.
he'll never be the focal point of an offense. he doesn't need to develop a jumper or actual low post moves. offensively, what he needs to do is solidify his ability to finish around the rim and that includes more than just dunking.
Finishing around the rim requires better footwork, and post moves too, as well as the ability to draw fouls with fakes.
more of a footwork aspect i agree. im just more worried about improving on those things around the rim, rather then spending time just trying to develop iso post moves that won't ever be used or significantly .
These guys don't work at it. Dwight is a piss poor example, hell he can't shoot free throws. That not a legislative thing, that's a work ethic thing. Dwight doesn't have a go to move, after HOW MANY YEARS? A true big who has a go to post move wouldn't allow guy half a foot shorter to guard him. When Aldridge has his head screwed on right he's very effective on the block. Guys are more interested in showing 3pt range than perfecting post play.
Keep an eye on the Nerlens Noel situation. It should provide a decent comparison for Capella's market. With more teams playing only one true big man, the supply of centers seems to exceed the demand.
from yahoo, this doesn't bode well for Capela (but good for rockets cap): https://www.yahoo.com/sports/nerlens-noel-isnt-loser-ongoing-free-agency-struggle-214401408.html
Question: For which teams in the NBA would Clint Capela really represent a desired substantial upgrade over their current starter-- enough so to pay Rockets a significant trade asset for him or enough to make him a substantial free agent offer when Capela becomes a Restricted Free Agent? I am just thinking that, in todays' NBA, there is a fairly limited market for someone like Capela because teams are playing fewer big men and it is fairly easy to find someone who does most of what Capela brings on the free agent market (Tarik Black, for example).
It would be nice if he could shoot a mid range jumper sorta like the one amare stoudamire developed under MDA. I couldn't care less if he ever develops a post game. But the defense is very important. If (when) we get melo, in order to really challenge the warriors and actually have an even playing field we need Clint to not just catch lobs and grab some rebounds. We need him to dominate the interior, completely shut down the paint and not allow any buckets down low. He has the physical tools, he's got the size, length, athleticism and agility to make it happen but he has to bring his mental aspect of the game up to par with the physical.
it basically comes down to whether or not he can guard DG. if not, he'll be on the bench for a better matchup
Its always been hard to call fouls on big men cause they are so much bigger. Its his an issue of it being hard to judge due to the size difference
More like "immobile" centers with no range exceed the demand. Meanwhile, mobile defensive bigs with range are scarce.
Yup. I totally agree with you. Post game's good but it's luxury nowadays. I prefer a good midrange/long game. It helps with spacing.
