When he was with Portland, Cliff was notorious for not showing up in the playoffs. I don't know how he has been since then. I would pass on him.
Not only that, but isn't he in his early sixties or something? I swear the guy's been around so long, he's got to be about as old as Tex Winter.
Detroit will almost certainly trade Cliff. In terms of PF/C's Detroit now has Elden Campbell, Ben Wallace, Mehmet Okur (they're very high on him), Darko Milicic, Zeljko Rebraca, and Cliff Robinson. Every single one of those guys is good enough to be in most every team's rotation. You can avoid calling Cliff a center if you want, but he's one of the best post defenders in the league. He can handle himself against pretty much anyone except the very biggest guys. Detroit re-signed him, but that was before they lucked into Milicic. That changed their plans. Cliff and/or Corliss Williamson are on the block to clear things out. Edit: He is a playoff choker, no doubt, but he gets his teams to the playoffs. ALWAYS. He's never missed them. He could teach the Rockets how to get there.
Cliff Robinson has never in his career missed the playoffs. I think he may have something to do with that. If it is reasonable, sign the man.
Robinson is exactly what we need. the guy can score, dup and still has hops...plus he is a vet with playoff experience.... he is not a FA though? he solves our 3 in the shortrun.....
Cliff would be a good fit for the Rockets with our current roster. If we have him we can trade both MoT and Cato. He's been getting 35 mins/ game. He can play 15 at the 5, 15 at the 4 for us. Robinson $8,421,875 6-yr: 38.0M 2004-05 Maurice Taylor $7,150,000 6-yr; 48.75M 2006-07 Kelvin Cato $6,696,000 6-yr; 42.0M 2005-06 We should be able to work something out. I'd say trade one player for him and the other to fill other need. (His price would be too high for a backup though! That shows how overpaid our 2 guys really are!) P.S. On the same note, I like players that can play both 4 and 5. Another is Rasheed Wallace $14,926,166 6-yr; 80.0M 2003-04 Maybe the yr after next, he can be had for < 10 mil/ yrs?
I'd love to trade MoT or Cato for him, but aren't they trying to get rid of him because they're crowded upfront?
The Pistons might be able to deal him if we let them throw in Rebraca, given the questions about his health. Larry Brown loves to mess around with the roster, and is notorious for taking bad contracts. He might just be willing to deal Cliff for Mo Taylor, straight up.
Larry Brown is not in charge in Detroit. Joe Dumars is and he's not stupid enough to take Taylor's bloated salary. And doing that would do nothing to alleviate Detroit's logjam of big men. If they want a player, it is a small forward. If they can't get that they'll go for a short contract and or picks.
I just don't understand how some people on this board can point out all the shortcomings a guy like EG would have as the starting 3 on this team, and then turn around and talk about how well Cliff Robinson would fit as our starting SF.
Larry Brown has considerable pull in the Pistons front office - remember his press conference after he was hired? He said he was excited about going to Detroit because he was going to have a major say in the roster moves and personnel changes. Taylor makes less than Cliff.
.. and don't forget the most important reason he'd fit well on our team... ..Cliff loves the headbands! -- droxford
Actually, dharocks, he never said that. Not sure where you're getting that from. He only has the input a normal coach would have and has said so (including at the press conference). Detroit is run in a certain way and everyone there knows it. The owner, Joe Dumars, and then everyone else.
1- Ask any Nuggets fan and they will tell you Raef is not and never will be a "true" center 2- take away last year and LaFrentz is averaging 7.7 rebounds for his career in 31 minutes a game. Even after his horrible year last year Raef's career rebounding average is still over 7 a game. 3- The weakest rebounding center is Predrag Drobnjak who is averaging 3.6 rebounds in 21.6 minutes a game for his career.
Apologies. The exact quote was, "I've never had final say. I always wanted to have input. I don't know what my title was in Philly. I'm not sure." If he expects to be getting more input than he got in Philly, where he was effectively GM, coach, and vice-president, he'll have a major say. He's also something of a control freak. If Joe D wants to keep him around, and might not once he finds out about Larry what everyone in Philly already knew about him, he'll give him considerable pull.
He doesn't have a big say. He may want it, but it doesn't matter. When he's long gone, Dumars will still be there and still be in charge. Brown is there to coach, they'll take what he says under consideration, but it is Dumars and the owner that will make the decisions. That's the way Detroit works. 100% guaranteed. Dumars is family to the owner and he's been brilliant at personnel maneuvers. The owner is extremely loyal to those in his inner circle. Extremely. The quote you refer to was in response to a question about how he would handle NOT having as big a say as he has in the past. He'll have "input" just like most coaches, but there is absolutely no question as to where the power is in Detroit.
