Sorry. It's always an entire TWO PARTIES. (that act like one). But most nanny-staters belong to the save-the-world messiah party.

I'd still like to know what all of the pro-seatbelt-law people here think about riding motorcycles. Not only do they not have seatbelts, but you don't have to wear even the most BASIC form of protection while on one. A freakin' helmet!

I think many are in favour of helmet laws too. And there are helmet laws in many jurisdictions. But a helmet does change the experience of riding a motorcycle. So in that sense, banning bikes, or (to a very much lesser degree) helmet laws, are more akin to banning convertibles or sports cars, then requiring seatbelts. I ride, and am in favour of helmet laws, for what it's worth.

A seatbelt should be unnoticeable if properly adjusted. It has minimal inconvenience and takes nothing away from the driving experience except to make it safer. Other then the guy who likes to rummage about and..ummm... reach around ...when he drives, could someone explain the sense of freedom that's being lost by wearing a belt?

for all those who also think it is about promoting safety why don't they have seatbelts on school buses?

The reasons I have heard on this are that....

    1. The size and construction of school buses offer enough safety

    2. The amount of people on board could hinder the exiting of the bus in case of an emergency if they were all wearing seat belts.

I remember reading a story where wearing a seatbelt cost someone their life. They had an accident and they couldn't get out because their seatbelt got stuck and they ended up dying because the car blew up. Something like that I just remember reading about it when I was younger.

The talk going around when Gov. Bush repealed the helmet law was this... (now I don't know this is true as it's pretty extreme, just what I kept hearing when it went down)... that motorcycle crashes where helmets were involved were leaving people all but dead, i.e. catastrophically debilitated but still alive and functioning, and that the medical costs of these accidents were staggering. Who knows, but I thought I'd throw that our for ya. I do know that statistics, which never lie of course, say that fatalities went up 30%. .

I personally think that if you want to ride without a helmet, that's your ridiculous prerogative. Having come up on more than one motorcycle accident where a rider wasn't wearing one, not only did it reaffirm my already entrenched notion of helmets being absolutely necessary, the incident(s) talked me out of a long time desire of being a motorcycle owner/rider myself.

Regarding seat belts, I mostly wear mine, though I tend not to be alright with others/govt telling/forcing me or anyone else how to live our lives when the issues at hand are of our own concern and no one else's.

I've ready many, many stories where not wearing a seatbelt cost people their lives.

    Ashley's and Alicia's Law
In Texas, all new school buses purchased after September will. And many purchased since the law was passed in 2007 have them already.

If you say so. I support your right to not buckle up. In fact, I encourage it. Stick it to the man.

I do say so. Everything you mentioned (speeding, running stop signs, etc) involves the safety of others on the road. Someone not wearing a seatbelt in their own vehicle does not. If you don't understand that, you really can't be helped.

And for the record, I always wear my seatbelt and make sure everyone else in my vehicle does as well. I don't care about "sticking it to the man" or whatever crap you're encouraging.

If you are ejected from your car in an accident because you were not wearing your seat belt, you could affect the safety of someone else.

Why the rolleyes? I have read many accounts of people that were ejected from their cars due to the lack of wearing a seat belt. Any object flying out of a car can lead to possible problems for other cars/people in the vicinity.

How many instances can you find where an ejected driver/passenger hurt a bystander.
