I don't get why Miami even gave up what they did. Lebron and Bosh had already agreed to accept lower salaries to sign with the Heat. So why give up all those picks and trade exceptions? And don't cite the 6-year deals. From Miami's standpoint they're only 4-year deals since the players can opt out.

If David Andersen was the dealbreaker, it doesn't make sense. If they wanted to even out the salary, the Rockets could have done a 2nd transaction of Bellini for the Rocket's trade exception from the Carl Landry trade. Bellini hasn't done anything for them.

The picks are worthless, especially the low 1st round picks. They can buy high 2nd round picks that would offer more flexibility in salary for rookies. Miami wouldn't have trade exceptions anyway, if they signed the free agents. Essentially, they gave nothing away.

Pat Riley keeps goodwill and a good reputation with other GMs with his willingness to give something back. Pat Riley has to think about the Heat's future for more than the next 4 years. If didn't even provide those teams with a TE to help rebuild, he could develop a rep as an ***.
