Clemens has played too many people as fools. Good riddance with him. He was mediocre with a pretty stout Yanks offense last year and i seriously doubt he could do much better with us.
Even if I liked Roger I'd still pass. He's broken down the last few years toward the end of the season and more importantly in the playoffs, including our world series year. On top of all that he'll be too expensive, and he's a self-absorbed attention w****.
If Clemens wants to pitch for you, then you accept. Especially if you're the Astros. It's a no brainer. They don't have a #2 starter. Plus, I think Clemes will try to use this year to clear his name if he pitches. He'll try to prove that he can pitch at a high level and will probably WANT to take drug tests often throughout the year. PERSONALLY, I don't care if anyone took steroids or not in the past. If that many people took it during the 'steroid era,' then I think the playing field at that time was about equal. roided pitcher vs roided hitter. For some reason, we are now making it an issue. Let's just straighten out the drug-testing and move on. Please don't attack me for my view on the whole steroid issue. I don't mean to offend anyone, and if I did....I apologize. The integrity of the sport is already questioned, whether or not you punish those in the report or not. The outcome will be the same. So MLB should just accept the mistakes made in the past (both theirs and the players) and look to a much brighter future.
Does Bourn kick puppies? Or does Matsui yell at little children when no one's around? Oh wait, Valverde must write all the grafitti I see on the overpasses around town. I wasn't aware that Chris Burke and Adam Everett contained all of the Astros' perceived "class". Class is not about a player, it's about an organizational mindset. The Astros are a class team.
My first reaction was "no way," but if Clemens, a veritable robber baron the last few years when it comes to taking the money, were to offer to play a season for the Astros for chump change, sure. Help the team and let Clemens chew on a little humility. He would be our second best pitcher for as long as he could bring it.
Clemen's ego is larger than the Sun. He just wants the media to fawn over him next Spring. His act has grown tiresome, and I'd be happy to see him just fade away at this point.
Class is an overrated term that sports reporters use all the time to exert their influnce over the public's opinion of an athlete. To anoint someone as "classy" is appearantly in high esteem and somehow makes them better than other players. Losers like john mcclaine are most guilty of this. The truth is that these guys dont give a crap what the media thinks about them. They are either ballers or they arent ballers. That's the only thing that's important. But somehow the media always seems to want to include their personal life in with their performance and give us a "holier than thou" rant on how that affects their performance. Kobe is a rapist and probally not classy, but who give a damn, that dude is a baller and brings it every night. Im tired of the judge jury and executioner thing that they pulled on all those dudes who did steriods too, like they wouldnt have juiced too if it mean you can bump your paycheck with an extra zero.
I'll echo everyone else and ask you to explain this position of yours. I'll add that while I sometimes disagree with your takes, they're normally pretty good. That's why I'm asking you clarify as this was clearly the worst post I've seen from you. And this provides me an opportunity to express my disappointment in Darrell Pittmann's comments over at Astrosdaily. I believe the accusations of "hypocrisy" and the expectation to terminate Tejada's and Clemens's associations with the Astros are just over the top. *Every* organization has had some of this to deal with. Shall we shut down baseball altogether? How about the NFL?
Being that the state of our starting rotation is in such a bad spot, I would take him back under these provisions: 1. That he signs for a very low contract, (5 mill or less) 2. That he be ready and pitch longer than the last half of the season. If those factors happen......Wade...Make it so.
I wonder if we can get Bonds as a pinch hitter, and hire Canseco as our strength and conditioning coach.
