We need him. look at JH in piston game I feel we really need CH.

I still remember Tmac's 4th foul, that time JH actually can foul first or at least same time, but he just stand there and look. Sucks

Nah, take your time Chuck, don't rush back. Let's play several other poor 4Qs to make JVG realize that Bonzi, Novak and Bill may be of some help.

Think guards scoring at will against us. Rafer and Head - no perimeter D. Now who could possibly come in and help with some D in the 3rd & 4th? Hmmmm......

FOr those that call JVG an idiot

well he had the smarts to start chucky

after realising that battier at the 4 wouldnt work

and because of that..we won some tough games

remember he used Cato as the starting PF..and now chucky ..both of which proved to be effective

so I would give him credit for that because he deserves it

    Now regarding Novak vs Pagett

i was all for Novak until I saw him play D

    Now regarding Vspan vs Luther

Vspan commits the same amount of turnovers, more fouls, not a good shot, with good defence and energy

Luther commits the same amount of turnovers, less fouls, the best shooter from behind the arc so far, clutch, less defence, decent enegery

Now when one of our bigs is off, I would want Luther in there to keep the offence going..and I think JVG is thinking along the same line..thats why Vspan is rotting on the bench

Plus Novak and Vspan have no chemistry with the starters what so ever...If JVG puts them on when we are getting blown out..the likilhood of them making a positive impact is much less than the likilhood of them making a negative impact

Battier at the 4 works. The problem is we need 2 Battiers. One at the 4, and one on the perimeter.

please stop. a four who only gets 4 boards a game does not work. and that's not a knock on battier he just isn't a four. he can't guard them, he's not a good enough rebounder. we couldn't live with maurice taylor at the four next to yao and he used to get 6 a game.

yeah, I agree with this, Battier is not big enough nor athletic enough to play the 4 on a consistent basis.

That is why Hayes is so important, he is not big enough, but he uses his quickness advantage and athleticism to at least contain the other team's 4.

How many boards per game does our starting 4 have have to get?

Well, you forget to mention that it takes him one year to figure out Hayes is a keeper. I will not jump out to make the conclusion that he gets this right purely out of luck, but his reluctancy in playing players that he doesn't "trust" is annoying.

Van Gundy figured out Hayes is good before many of Van Gundy's critics did. Plenty of people on this bbs was hating on Chuck Hayes during the offseason and citing the reliance on Hayes (and not acquiring one of their glamour boy PFs) as a huge mistake.

Hell, there were even not one, not two, but three threads about getting Mo "I'm an ass player" Taylor back.

For those saying having Chuck means nothing to us losing those games, I strongly suggest you do two things:

    1) Check out the correlation between our rebounding and wins.
    2) Check out the correlation between Chuck's rebounding and the Rockets rebounding.

There are things that can't be determined with statistics. This is NOT one of those things.

Chuck's PER is best in the league btw.

Clearly, Battier can't play PF for more than a few minutes on this team. Howard does absolutely nothing but hit a 15 ft jumper at a 45% clip when WIDE open. That's useless. Battier, Howard, Novak, and Padgett are all decent change-of-pace guys off the bench. But Hayes helps this team win more than the others so he should play more than the others. As the season goes on, he'll improve by gelling with the team better. He's a gym rat so he'll improve his conditioning as well. He'll foul less with experience.

As for the others, tey basically stand no chance of improving (except for Novak) as the season goes on. So knowing what we know about them, it's clear that the margin between them and Chuck is LARGE and will widen as the season progresses.

To add to Van Gundier's post, obviously, since Chuck Hayes was offered a contract midseason last season (and he played in quite a few games), JVG knew that Hayes was a keeper. In fact, from what I remember, JVG specifically stated the reason why Hayes wasn't playing longer was because he was performing better in shorter rather than longer spurts of time (which seems to have been justified by the statistics from last year). Now, however, since Hayes has obviously also increased his stamina, JVG feels comfortable giving him more minutes. Bear in mind, he also gave JL3 minutes, even when most people wouldn't give an undrafted, super-undersized pg minutes.

And to add to that... they wanted to pull Chuck back up from the NBDL earlier - here's a quote from Feb 9th 2006

I'm still wondering what's John Lucas III doing so badly practice that stops him from being on the floor. Truth be told I can't remember who's our backup to Rafer alston.............errr...........Vspan? Damn my memory is crap.

Please do not lump me with the rest of those people. I was loving on Chuck from about the time he arrived. JVG still could have played him more at season end last year despite the protests of those saying "Chuck was too weak and wasted to play more than 12 minutes every 3rd game."

    PLEASE! Spare me!

Show me some JVG quotes, not CD or Morey quotes. JVG was playing Rybo in front of Hayes when we were shorthanded.

And as far as Bongboy goes I gave up on his sorry *** a long time ago.
