The Houston Texans lost linebacker Brian Cushing on Monday night to a left knee injury that came off an egregious chop block by New York Jets left guard Matt Slauson.

It was a flagrant low strike in which Slauson came from behind and cut Cushing's knees out from under him. ESPN's Jon Gruden noted the shady tactics, and one of Cushing's old USC buddies, Green Bay Packers All-Pro linebacker Clay Matthews, reacted strongly on Twitter to what he observed:

If the NFL really wants to increase player safety, start protecting players on BOTH sides of the ball.

Continued Matthews: "Where is the NFL's protection on blocks below the waist like that on Cushing. Double standard!"

Matthews isn't alone in arguing that the NFL's hyper-focus on protecting its quarterbacks and skill players doesn't fully extend to those who make their living on defense.

The Texans won't be pleased when they sit down to review Monday's night game tape.

It was dirty as hell and I hope that guy gets what is coming to him. The middle of our defense got noticeably softer with Cushing out. Hope to god it is a sprain.

Same here. Cushing seemed to be playing better/ faster as well than he does typical till the trash hit on the knee

On the sack fumble, had cushing been there, he recovers that.

=( It's too early for next man up.

Definitely illegal. I hope Cushing is alright. We're going to need him for next Sunday's game.

The way that play looked, I would be happy if we could even get him back for the playoffs. His knee buckled inward, I hope it was just at a bad angle and it just flexed anteriorly instead of medially. Definite risk for an ACL/MCL tear.

If his acl is torn, we should just tear Slausons acl.

We only play twice in the next 4 weeks,so hopefully it's not too bad and that will give him time to heal

Danieel Manning says that Cush is on crutches, I am just hoping it is not season ending. Bradie James has been awful.

If he did torn his acl then I don't think he would of walked on his own power.

kinda reminiscent of the Yao knee injury announcement after the 12th game of the 22 game win streak in '08

FML as a HOU fan. Praying not ligament damage but i've been groomed a pessimist. :(
