Shakespeare In Love this POS won the Oscars for Best Actress Best Supporting Actress Best Writting and finally the biggest farce of them all, it beat Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture........ I found the flick to be damn near unwatchable it sucked so bad.
I'm not really a weird-movie-loving guy... but there were just stupid elements in that movie that I couldn't ignore. -- droxford
I've seen you state this twice. I'll have to rent this Repo Man you speak of. When "Titanic" won the Oscar for Best Picture, I wanted to leave the country for a while.
There used to be a website that compared and contrasted the two movies but it is no more. Quentin Tarantino at least admits RM was a big influence on his work. RM has a better soundtrack too.
I absolutely hated "Vertigo" on first viewing, but to be fair that was several years ago. I'm considering giving it another try now that I'm older, but would still be interested to hear any Hitchcock fans discuss the merits of this one.
Ooh, ooh, I'll field this one!! Don't know how many other Hitchcock fans are on this board, but you are the 2nd person I have met that has seen "Vertigo" and didn't see what the fuss was about it. There are some flawed parts about it - Jimmy Stewart's character gets a little too obsessed and Kim Novak, despite being delicious eye candy, was still trying hard to convince people that she could be a serious actress and not some sexpot. To fully appreciate "Vertigo", you have to be aware of a couple of things: 1) The people who wrote the novel that the movie is based on wrote it with Hitchcock specifically in mind! So, if there was ever a story that was tailor-made to be a Hitchcock movie (Robert Bloch's "Psycho", Daphne Du Maurier's "Rebecca", etc), it was this one. 2) Hitchcock had a severe fetish with cool blondes. His love for Grace Kelly was legendary and he was absolutely brutal to Tippi Hedren. When I watch "Vertigo", I imagine Hitch as the main character and Grace Kelly as the Kim Novak dual role. If you think of it like that, the movie will probably make more sense. 3) The first time I watched it, I liked it, but it wasn't until the 3rd or 4th time that I viewed it that I realized it was one of his best movies ever. It can be a tough movie to watch as it is sad and if you are a fan of Jimmy Stewart, you may not like the way his character changes in this movie. But it is a dark movie and the restoration process that was done on it makes it look so much better now. Also, Bernard Herrmann's musical score is one of the best he ever did (definitely the best he did for Hitch) as the music punctuates precisely key scenes and enhances the movie a lot. Also, Barbara Bel Geddes shows that she was one of the most underrated supporting actresses of her day in this movie. "North by Northwest" is my all-time favorite Hitchcock movie, but "Vertigo" is a close 2nd, ranking right ahead of "Psycho", "Rear Window", and "Marnie".
Oooh that's a good one. I can't stand that one. Another one I can't stand is Requiem For A Dream. What a pile of crap that movie was IMHO.
That makes me dislike it even more. Count me in on the Lord of the Rings hating. It struck me as so cheesy, I turned it off after half an hour.
Lord of the Rings and Star Wars (all of them). Fell asleep during Star Wars, left in the middle of LOTR. I'm just not a big fan of sci-fi movies.
Lord of the Rings Star Wars Star Trek Harry Potter Godfather (There... I said it. Maybe if I saw the 2nd or 3rd ones, I'd change my mind. Or maybe if I even saw the first one for a second time, b/c I don't remember anything about it.) Swingers (it was OK. I bought the DVD, but I'm not as gaga over it as, say TSG is)
As I recall (vaguely), this was my main problem with the film--I just couldn't buy into the way the characters started acting after the "lookalike" was introduced...it did not strike me as the way two human beings would really behave. However, on the other hand, I don't think I really fully grasped what was going on with the plot at the time. From what I've read since then (including your excellent post, Manny) I think I would view this part of the movie differently now. Thanks for some very interesting insights; they are greatly appreciated.
Minority Report was probably the last good sci-fi film I saw. But yeah, they tend not to be my thing. Does Spirited Away count? That's an amazing movie.
